The two biggest performance pickup trucks in the market are going head to head for the 2022 model year. The 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor and 2022 Ram 1500 TRX are both fast, cool-looking, luxurious on the inside, and expensive. The other thing the two of them both share? These two trucks both have terrible gas mileage. With big trucks come big engines, and a big engine means poor fuel economy. Everyone knows these trucks aren’t well known for saving owners money on fuel, but which one is worse? Here’s the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor vs. the 2022 Ram 1500 TRX: which has worse gas mileage?

2022 Ford F-150 Raptor fuel economy

The official EPA estimated specifications for fuel economy on the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor are not yet available. Though we do know that the numbers are going to be the same, or very similar to the 2021 model year. Currently, the 2021 Raptor averages 15 city mpg and 18 highway mpg. The standard F-150 Raptor will likely have the same engine as the 2021 model and therefore average just about the exact same gas mileage.

The difference for the 2022 model year comes from the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor R. This year, the R variant is getting a V8 engine. Not just any V8 engine, but the same 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine as the Mustang Shelby GT500. The Mustang Shelby GT500 averages 12 city mpg and 18 highway mpg and is a car weighing 4,182 lbs. The 2021 Raptor weighs 5,710 lbs, and the 2022 Raptor R with the V8 will weigh even more. We expect the Raptor R gas mileage to be even worse than the GT500.

2022 Ram 1500 TRX fuel economy

The estimated fuel economy for the 2022 Ram 1500 TRX puts it at 10 city mpg and 14 highway mpg. Car and Driver took the TRX on its “75-mph fuel economy route” and it scored a lowly 13 highway mpg. The standard TRX model’s gas mileage is, well, bad. This is the type of truck for those looking to go off-road and have some fun driving fast. As a daily driver, it’ll become quite costly, especially in a city setting. Owners of the 2022 Ram 1500 TRX will be spending most of their time at the gas station. The Raptor isn’t really much better, though.

The 2022 Ram 1500 TRX comes with a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8, aka the Hellcat engine. The Hellcat engine is much more comparable to that of the Raptor R. The standard models are vastly different due to the V6 in the Raptor, and the gas mileage shows that. While the 2022 Raptor R official gas mileage is unavailable, we can assume it will be very close, or worse than the Ram 1500 TRX.

Which truck is faster?

The Ram 1500 TRX can reach 60-mph in just 3.7 seconds and can even reach a top speed of 118-mph. The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor can reach the same top speed but makes the 0-60 trip in 5.3 seconds. That’s a full second-and-a-half slower than the Ram 1500 TRX. That’s a pretty remarkable difference, but we’ll have to wait and see just how well the Raptor R will perform when it becomes available.

Both the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor and 2022 Ram 1500 TRX will be available late in 2021. The two performance pickup trucks have a lot of desirable qualities, but fuel economy is not one of them. If fuel economy is what you’re looking for in this price range, look elsewhere. Might we recommend the 2022 Ford Lightning or 2022 Rivian R1T? The answer to which of the two trucks has worse gas mileage is the 2022 Ram 1500 TRX until the 2022 Raptor R V8 becomes available.
