The F-150 is widely considered one of the best pickup trucks ever. It has been around for quite a while and is still a hot seller. Because of this, many people seek out used Ford F-150 models when they’re in the market for a truck. However, some recent models are best left on the dealer lot as they have a few notable issues. In particular, the 2015 Ford F-150 is one of the worst.

The 2015 through 2017 used Ford F-150 models aren’t among the best pickup trucks

The F-150 might be one of the best pickup trucks, but the 2015-2017 models lack this distinction. This is a shame because these were standout years for the Blue Oval when it comes to sales of the iconic truck. Luckily, it seems the automaker mostly fixed the issues, as the 2018 F-150 is significantly better.

Regarding used 2015 Ford F-150 problems, perhaps the most notable issues come from the transmission. In particular, there were and still are complaints about the truck slipping out of gear. For the most part, this happens with fast acceleration and towing large amounts. However, there have also been reports of the transmission slipping under normal conditions.

All three used F-150 models have complaints about the brakes. Many owners have needed to replace the master cylinder after the brakes all of a sudden stopped working. According to Vehicle History, this mostly impacts models with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. Unfortunately, the master cylinder sometimes leaks brake fluid into the brake booster and causes a loss of power.

Used Ford F-150 trucks also have issues with the doors. In particular, a malfunction can cause the doors to open while driving. However, there was a recall for this in 2017.

Later models are much better

People looking for used F-150 models have several options. For the most part, anything after the 2017 model could be a solid choice. In particular, the 2018 F-150 is a well-liked choice. Not only is this a solid model because it corrected the issues from the previous three, but it offers a diverse group of powertrains, just like the newer versions.

Regarding speed, this is also a solid used Ford F-150 as the fastest trim only needs about 5.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour. Buyers can also count on the 2018 F-150 for towing as it can handle over 13,000 pounds with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine paired with the Max Trailer Tow package.

People who don’t want a used truck as new as this will also have good luck with Ford F-150 models from before 2015. This shows that the F-150 is one of the best pickup trucks because there are very few models buyers need to steer clear of.
