The 2022 Ford F-150 has a starting MSRP of $31,520, which certainly is not cheap. And that is just for the base F-150 XL model. Undoubtedly, most buyers are interested in the XLT and Lariat trims, which can climb over $50,000. If you don’t have $50k to drop on a new pickup truck, you might be interested in what the used market has to offer. Because the F-150 has been around for so long, there are certainly some used models out there that could be better than buying new. Especially with the eighth-generation Ford F-150.

Which used Ford F-150 is best?

The Ford F-150 truck is now in its ninth generation, but the eighth-gen still represents a pretty solid value proposition. 2015 ushered in a new era for the F-150, and they do feel like truly modern trucks. For the most part, if you opt for an eighth-gen Ford F-150, you can get most of the features that you will find on a 2022 F-150 model. And, you won’t have to pay for a new pickup.

Prices of the eighth-generation F-150 do vary. But generally, even for an XLT model, it looks like you can find one for around $30,000. Over on AutoTemptest, there are even some Ford full-size trucks with the Lariat package listed for less than $35k. And that makes for a pretty good deal, even in today’s used car market. 

Is the eighth generation F-150 reliable?

In terms of reliability, a Ford F-150 built after 2015 should be good to go. One of the major changes for this full-size truck is the use of aluminum throughout the body, which helps to cut down on weight. At the same time, the frame and firewall are still high-strength steel, which means serious durability.

Because of the use of lighter materials, this era of Ford beat competitors like Chevy and Ram in terms of fuel economy, towing, and payload capacity. According to AutoTrader, it is possible that the bed of the F-150 can be more easily damaged. But, with a bed liner, those worries should be mitigated. 

It is worth noting that eighth-gen F-150 models after do have some recalls out. And there have been reports involving the electric throttle body. But for the most part, these full-size trucks are more reliable than those of the past. And you can benefit from a variety of different engine options depending on your needs. 

Should you buy a used F-150 instead of new?

If you don’t have the funds for a new pickup, a used F-150 can get you more truck for your money. And, you can get most of the modern features that you will find on a 2022 model. Although, the new hybrid engine was not introduced until 2021.

If an eighth-generation Ford F-150 is still out of reach, you can always look at older models. But that will likely require more research to ensure that you are getting a reliable full-size truck. And, you will have to forego some of the convenience and safety features offered by a newer model.
