The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a king among luxury SUVs. This boxy beast is so expensive that even 10-year-old used G-Wagens run about $58,000. But what about a pre-owned model that’s only a couple of years old? Here’s what a 2021 G-Class offers and why this year might be easier to find than others.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, built for daily driving and off-road adventures, sees decent U.S. sales for such a pricey SUV. A 2023 G-Class hovers around $192,000, and so far this year, Mercedes has sold 5,771 G-Wagens.

However, the company moved a whopping 8,521 G-Class SUVs in 2021. That’s 1,224 more than in 2022. The 2021 G-Class also outsold the 2020 model by 798. Second-quarter sales for the 2021 version took off. During those three months, the German automaker sold 2,861 G-Wagens stateside.

One reason for the 2021 G-Class sales increase could be that Mercedes-Benz offered greater customization through more exterior and interior color combinations.

New 2021 G-Class G550 models started at about $133,00. But adding options increased the price significantly. In its review, Car and Driver recommended choosing only packages providing more practical features.

For example, the Exclusive Interior package added premium Nappa leather upholstery, while the Seat Comfort package upgraded to massaging front seats and ventilated cushions.

The standard 2021 G-Wagen packs a twin-turbo V8 engine producing 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. But buyers could opt for the AMG-tuned G 63, harnessing 577 hp and 627 lb-ft. However, that cost about $25,000 extra, Car and Driver reported.

The G550 also has a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. That setup gets an EPA-estimated 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.

Other features in the 2021 G-Class G550 include a power-adjustable steering column, a 12.3-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a three-zone automatic climate control system.

Is now a good time to buy a used G-Wagen?

Consider yourself lucky if you can afford even a used G-Wagen. But is now the perfect time to buy a 2021 G-Class? Data shows this luxury SUV loses only 0.6 % of its value over three years. That makes it valuable on the pre-owned market.

However, that also means that used G-Wagens remain expensive. You’ll likely pay over $130,000 for a 2021 G-Class with average mileage and in good condition. Older models, like 2019 and 2018, also fetch six figures. Going back to 2015 or so should lower the purchase price to under $100,000 — but probably not by much.

You likely won’t find a great deal on a 2021 G-Class. But if you can afford a well-maintained example, go for it. You’d get your money’s worth.
