Depending on your age, location, and other various factors, getting the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination isn’t proving to be the most logistically simple task for everyone. And that’s just for those in urban areas. Imagine being somewhere so remote you are unable to receive vaccination only because it can’t be transported to where you are. Toyota’s new refrigerated Land Cruiser SUV has earned WHO approval and will soon embark to bridge the gap between COVID-19 vaccines and hard-to-reach places that are home to people who want to receive the vaccination.

Toyota didn’t create this Land Cruiser just for the COVID-19 vaccine

In general, vaccines need to be refrigerated. The current state of things means high demand for the COVID-19 vaccine. However, in the future, these Toyota Land Cruiser 78 models with refrigerators will be available to transport an array of vaccines. Remote spots will now have increased access to medical supplies such as vaccinations that require refrigeration.

The Toyota Land Cruiser was collaboratively created by Toyota Tsusho Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, and B Medical Systems. Yesterday, March 31, 2021, the team announced that WHO gave its approval. The Toyota Land Cruiser with a designated refrigeration unit for the transport of vaccinations.

“a dedicated refrigerator for transporting vaccines at the appropriate temperatures developed jointly by the three companies has obtained Performance, Quality and Safety (PQS) prequalification for quality of medical devices and equipment as set by the World Health Organization (“WHO”).”

No other refrigerated vehicle in the world has this special PQS prequalification

Due to the fact that Toyota Tsusho registered for the prequalification, this is the first official SUV in the world with a specialized refrigeration unit made for vaccinations. In fact, this PQS qualification makes this dedicated Toyota Land Cruiser 78 the leading option for remote vaccine transport. Keeping true to its core values, Toyota officially mobilizes vaccines.

These refrigerator-bearing Land Cruisers will traverse rough terrain in places like the African bush. In turn, they will provide security and safety to people who would not otherwise have access to this protection against the virus. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have witnessed and experienced fear. As a global community, we’ve seen sadness and felt confusion, and made difficult adjustments.

However, we’ve also seen innovation. We’ve seen socially distanced humans pull together in new and unprecedented ways. This refrigerated Toyota Land Cruiser SUV helps bring hope to isolated communities. Isolation is certainly one of the challenges we’ve faced over the last year. But––thanks to this Land Cruiser 78 with a B Medical Systems’ CF850 vaccine refrigerator––isolation no longer has to hinder remote communities from acquiring access to inoculation.
