The Toyota RAV4 is indisputably the world’s most popular SUV model. It outsells all of its competitors year after year. The peculiar thing about the RAV4 is that the small SUV isn’t particularly quick or exceptionally attractive. In fact, it can even be considered plain and average by many consumers. So why does the RAV4 sell so well?

The main reason that so many drivers across the globe choose the RAV4 over rivals is its value proposition. The small SUV has always been affordable and practical. It has decent fuel economy, so many consumers are happy with its gas mileage. The Toyota RAV4 is a great daily driver for the average working-class citizen. It functions as a commuter and has enough cabin and cargo space to satisfy many small families.

Toyota may dominate the SUV segment now, but many competitors are right on its tail. Honda produces a popular small SUV as well, the Honda CR-V. The Honda CR-V recently got a redesign, making it more expensive than ever. That being said, it’s more modern than the current RAV4 generation.

Honda isn’t the only brand on Toyota’s heels in the small SUV vehicle segment. Hyundai Motor Company and Mazda Motor Corporation also produce competitive small SUVs. Models like the Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX-5 have recently climbed in rankings. The Toyota RAV4 has plenty of competitors that are only improving with time. Can the small SUV remain relevant without a redesign?
