The auto industry anxiously awaited the reveal of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. However, the humongous price tag of the all-electric truck was the biggest shock of the night.

During the presentation, GMC unveiled the style, specs, and plans of the revolutionary supertruck. Meanwhile, the American automaker is already taking Hummer EV reservations for just $100. However, average joes won’t likely be making a deposit, as early production models will carry the steepest sticker price.

GMC likely wants the Hummer EV to start on the right foot by showing off its true potential. The loaded Edition 1 trim will be the only model available at launch, and it starts at an MSRP of $112,595.

What innovations come with this expensive trim, and when will other models be available? Let’s take a deeper dive into GMC’s all-electric truck.

The price of power is always steep

GM is undoubtedly taking a risk by taking on Telsa Cybertruck in the race to create a production all-electric supertruck. People will bat an eye at the price of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1, but its headlining features will make them want to get behind the wheel.

The Edition 1 trim has all the futuristic goodies drivers expect from the next generation of electric vehicles. This model comes with three electric motors that produce 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. However, Car and Driver reported that GM’s torque calculation is misleading. Nevertheless, this is one powerful truck, so much so that it can go from 0-60 MPH in just three seconds with the help of launch control. Meanwhile, lower trims don’t offer the same amount of power as the Edition 1 will.

The Edition 1 has everything but the kitchen sink

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV also includes several selectable driving modes, including off-road and terrain. However, that’s just a tease to its off-road capability compared to its next innovative technology. Its available extract mode lifts the supertruck’s adaptive air-ride suspension by nearly six inches, allowing drivers to trek over taller obstacles. This feature won’t initially be available on the Edition 1 trim, but it will come as a free software update in the future.

Those suffering from sticker shock still might not be convinced that this supertruck is all it’s cracked up to be. However, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV also has luxurious features to go along with its innovations.

It comes with removable, transparent sky panels, an extreme off-road package, and exclusive interior badging. Plus, the Edition 1 trim features 800-volt fast-charge capability, which can provide up to 100 miles of battery life in just 10 minutes.

New GMC Hummer EV trims will debut annually

GM isn’t resigned to the old saying of saving the best for last. Instead, it’s going in the reverse order. The Hummer EV3X comes out in Fall 2022 with a starting MSRP of $99,995. Next will be the Hummer EV2X, with a Spring 2023 release and an $89,995 price tag. Finally, the entry-level Hummer EV2 will launch in Spring 2024 at a more realistic price of $79,995.

The base trim comes with GM’s Multipro tailgate, two electric motors that deliver 625 hp, and surround vision cameras. Additionally, it comes standard with a new and enhanced version of GM’s Super Cruise feature, which utilities hands-free driving and automatic lane changes.

Meanwhile, the EV2X is the lowest trim that will include the hyped-up ‘crabwalk’ feature. This four-wheel steering system helps the truck reduce its turning radius, increasing maneuverability in certain driving situations.

Like the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1, the EV3X has three motors. However, the EV3X will only produce 800 hp and 9,500 lb-ft torque.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV: Overpriced but not overhyped

Those who drop six figures on the Edition 1 trim level of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be rewarded with a unique driving experience. Only time will tell if the Edition 1 models’ added features are a novelty or worth the extra money. Meanwhile, the rest of us will wait in anticipation as this all-electric supertruck gradually becomes more affordable.
