There’s a serious problem facing electric pickup trucks. While towing, the driving range drops significantly, making towing problematic. The solution to this problem could be the new Ram 1500 Ramcharger. Could it be the perfect plug-in hybrid truck?

What is the new Ramcharger?

Ram set up this new truck differently than most standard hybrid models, but we’ve seen this setup before. In the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger, a 3.6-liter Pentastar gas engine sends power to the batteries and, in some instances, to the electric motors.

Only the electric motors drive the wheels, which makes this an electric vehicle, but the gasoline engine makes it a hybrid. Although the gas engine isn’t driving the wheels at all, there’s a distinction that can’t be ignored: fully-electric vehicles do not come with a gas engine, period.

What made this new Ram truck necessary?

As InsideEvs reports, the Ram team took to the streets towing in a competitor’s electric truck with a full charge and didn’t make it the 76 miles between Auburn Hills and Flint, MI. This left the team wondering how to make a pickup truck that is both electric and capable of towing greater distances. The new 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is the result.

What makes this hybrid truck different from others?

The setup in the hybrid Ram truck isn’t a new system. It’s the same hybrid setup Chevy offered in the deleted Volt PHEV. When the gas engine sends power to the batteries or electric motors this is a series hybrid system. This differs from a parallel hybrid, the setup found in the Toyota Prius and most other hybrid vehicles.

How far can the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger truck travel on a full battery?

The new Ramcharger can drive up to 145 miles using only electric power in the batteries. This is much further than most PHEVs, which can typically only travel 30 to 40 miles on a full charge. The battery pack in this hybrid truck is much larger than most hybrid battery packs and rivals some EVs in size.

This Ram truck travels about 690 miles before requiring a refill when the tank is full and the batteries fully charged. Another cool feature of this new truck is its ability to use a DC fast charger. These chargers add 100 miles of driving range in only a few minutes, making it versatile and useful.

Could the new 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger shatter preconceptions about what hybrid and electric trucks should be? Possibly.
