The race to produce the most popular electric pickup truck nameplate is underway. Rivian and Ford already make electric pickup trucks. General Motors and Ram aren’t too far behind. The Tesla Cybertruck is coming as well…eventually. Ram left out one major detail when it revealed the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV concept.

The Ram 1500 Revolution will have one option that isn’t available on any other electric truck

Ram is late to the electric pickup truck party. The American automaker’s electric pickup truck will follow the models from Rivian, Ford, and General Motors.

Motor1 claims that Ram left out an important detail when highlighting the many awesome available features and options the Ram 1500 Revolution will offer. The Ram REV that was on display at CES 2023 was a concept vehicle. The production version could be very different.

According to Motor1, Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, said that an internal combustion engine would be an option for the Ram 1500 Revolution during a roundtable discussion. This will likely be a plug-in hybrid system similar to that of popular plug-in hybrid models like the Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid. A PHEV system would make this version of the Ram 1500 Revolution the first plug-in hybrid pickup truck.

So, there will be a Ram 1500 Revolution BEV and a Ram 1500 Revolution PHEV. This is great news because while a fully-electric option is welcome, it isn’t as practical for towing or long-distance driving as a plug-in hybrid vehicle. As if Ram’s new pickup wasn’t already sweet enough.

What trucks will the Ram 1500 Revolution compete with?

The Ram 1500 Revolution will rival the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV, and possibly the Tesla Cybertruck (it’s been delayed thrice thus far). Upper trim levels that offer more capability and features at a higher price point will compete with the Rivian R1T and the GMC Hummer EV.

Since the Ram 1500 is one of the most popular full-size pickup trucks on the market, many consumers expect the Ram 1500 EV to be competitive as well. There’s no telling whether or not the Ram 1500 EV will provide as much value as the F-150 Lightning or Silverado EV. One thing is for sure following the electric truck’s debut. Ram is coming to compete at the highest level.

What do drivers want from an electric Ram pickup truck?

The Ram 1500 is known for its refined interior and smooth ride quality. Consumers expect the same degree of comfort and style from the upcoming Ram 1500 Revolution. The electric pickup truck (and its PHEV counterpart) should be classy, capable, and affordable enough to become popular on American roads.

Automakers like Ford are struggling to keep their electric pickup truck affordable. The electric pickup truck space is still very much still in its infancy. Some consumers will jump at the opportunity to get an electric Ram pickup truck. Others will watch and wait to hear the experiences of the EV’s first batch of owners. Will the Ram 1500 Revolution be the most impactful electric pickup truck yet?
