The Ford Ranger was the Blue Oval’s smallest available truck model until the Ford Maverick came along. The Ranger is 11 inches longer than the Maverick, five inches wider, and two inches taller. The Maverick starts at just $19,995. Its top-level Lariat trim is the only Maverick trim that comes close to the Ranger in price.

Ford was able to produce such a cheap truck because of its experience and abundance of designs and parts. The Maverick is unique but also shares similar qualities to other Ford trucks. The proof is in the specs.

The Ford Maverick Lariat brings the luxury

The Ford Maverick Lariat is available with either a hybrid powertrain or a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that makes 250 horsepower. The EcoBoost engine option gets 23 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

The Maverick Lariat comes standard with ActiveX premium vinyl seats as well as a power eight-way adjustable seat with a power lumbar driver and a six-way adjustable manual passenger seat. It includes a 6.5-inch instrument cluster screen and an eight-inch LCD touchscreen center stack.

The Ford Maverick Lariat trim also comes standard with a 12-volt outlet. It includes Remote Keyless Entry and Intelligent Access with Push-Button Start. The 2022 Ford Maverick Lariat is extremely luxurious for a small truck. Just because the Maverick is small doesn’t mean it provides any less value than other Ford trucks.

The Ford Ranger XL is a powerful small Ford truck

The 2022 Ford Maverick may be the newer truck, but the 2021 Ford Ranger is the more seasoned truck. The Ranger has been around since 1983. The 2021 Ford Ranger delivers familiar dependability but is that enough to best the flashy new Maverick’s highest trim level?

The 2021 Ford Ranger starts at $25,070, just $420 less than the 2022 Ford Maverick’s most expensive trim. The Ranger uses a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that makes 270 horsepower. It gets 21 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway.

The original small Ford truck’s XL trim comes standard with FordPass Connect with 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot and 911 Assist. It includes a Smart-Charging USB port. The Ford Ranger XL also includes three 12-volt power outlets and an outside temperature display.

Which is the better small Ford truck?

The 2021 Ford Ranger XL is the more powerful small Ford truck. It can tow and carry more weight. It also has more horsepower than any 2022 Ford Maverick trim. The Ford Ranger XL is the better work truck.

Small trucks aren’t all about power. Value is also extremely important. For just $420 more than the Ford Ranger XL, consumers can get the Ford Maverick Lariat trim with plenty of luxury and tech add ons. Car and Driver called the Ranger’s interior outdated. The Maverick Lariat, on the other hand, offers a great cabin for its price.

The 2022 Ford Maverick Lariat is the better daily driver because it adds more value for the price. The Ford Maverick is truly changing the way we look at small Ford trucks.
