What’s the Most Reliable Car You’ve Owned That Everyone Said Was Unreliable?
Have you ever gone to see a movie that everyone said was terrible, but you really liked it? That’s what these cars are like. These cars had a bad reputation for reliability, yet there are people out there who say they basically lasted forever.
The person who asked the question, looking for the most reliable car people have owned despite a bad reputation for reliability, said theirs was a Volkswagen Atlas with 119,000 miles on it. They said on Reddit that it was “beaten like a rented mule,” but it “only ever had a wiring harness recall and a battery drain issue that turned out to be a software fix.” They added that it still runs exactly the same as it did when new.
It turns out the Atlas isn’t the only Volkswagen people raved about for reliability. One person said they had a Passat that made it to 285,000 miles, while another reached 165,000. Someone else had one reach 200,000 miles and said that aside from a minor A/C fix, it was “flawless.”
The reputation of a car’s reliability is in the eye of the beholder
Another car that made the list was the Mazda RX7. “I got to 212K miles on an original engine,” one person wrote, while another said, “I had one with 245K!”
Several readers suggested the Jeep Cherokee. One commenter reported having one reach 250,000 miles. Two other people reported making it to 150K with little issue.
“According to Reddit, all Chryslers are junk,” another person commented, then added that their Chrysler 300 has “been a fantastic car.” That sentiment was seconded by another driver who said, “I also loved my 300. And I’ve owned Chargers as well. Fantastic cars.”
“Everyone says Nissan is junk, but our experience has been quite the opposite,” someone else stated. “Our Nissan Rogue has been great… Just shy of 90k miles now and shows no signs of stopping.”
Other cars of note that received a mention included a BMW 325e that had over 300,000 miles on it, a Land Rover Discovery “with easily 250k miles” on it, the Subaru STI, and a Nissan Maxima that reached 275,000 miles.
Even the Dodge Dart received praise from more than one owner. “I drove that thing to 140k with nothing but an alternator replacement and 20k-mile oil changes,” said one of them.
There was also a Chrysler Aspen with 180,000 miles, a Chevy Venture with 275,000, a GMC Yukon with 230K, and a Hyundai Santa Fe Sport that reached a whopping 319,000 miles.
The list goes on and on. What it shows is that with proper maintenance and a little bit of luck, just about any car can be reliable, regardless of its reputation.
