GMC has a lot of great cars in its lineup right now, and American car shoppers seem to enjoy buying and owning a GMC SUV. But as is the case with any other automaker, not all of GMC’s cars are doing well, and this is particularly true for the company’s SUVs. Here’s a look at GMC’s least popular SUV right now and how far it fell from its former position.

GoodCarBadCar currently has the sales data for GMC’s vehicles going from January to June of this year. Unsurprisingly, the best-selling GMC vehicle right now is the Sierra pickup truck, as it’s sold nearly 76,000 units in the second quarter of the year. On the other end of the spectrum, the worst-selling GMC vehicle is the Hummer EV at just 63 units sold. That’s also not surprising since the Hummer EV is still ramping up production.

As for GMC’s SUVs, the Acadia is the automaker’s best-selling SUV in the second quarter of 2023 as it’s sold just over 24,200 units of the midsize SUV. It’s followed by the Yukon, and GMC has sold over 22,200 units of the full-size SUV.

Finally, there’s the Terrain. It’s not only the smallest SUV in GMC’s lineup, but it’s also the worst-selling one right now. GMC has sold about 19,700 units of the compact SUV in the second quarter of the year.

The GMC Terrain was selling much better last year

These sales numbers are a stark contrast to what they were last year. In the second quarter of 2022, the Terrain was actually GMC’s best-selling SUV. The automaker sold nearly 22,800 units of the compact SUV in the second quarter of 2022. That was compared to the 17,000 units that the Yukon sold, and the 15,300 units that the Acadia sold.

In percentage terms, this means that the Terrain saw a roughly 20% decline in year-over-year sales, while its two larger siblings saw massive growth in year-over-year sales. There was a similar trend even if you look at the sales numbers on a month-by-month basis. So far in 2023, the Terrain’s sales numbers have been flat every month, as it’s hovered at around 6,000 units per month.

The Yukon, meanwhile, has been selling better than the Terrain every month, and the large SUV has sold over 7,000 units per month from March to June. The Acadia, meanwhile, had a more extreme jump.

In the first quarter of the year, the Acadia lagged behind the Yukon and the Terrain as it was selling around 5,000 units per month. In the second quarter though, its sales numbers jumped, and it was averaging 8,000 units per month in the second quarter.

There is reason to believe that this isn’t terrible news for the GMC Terrain

Supply chain issues may explain why the Terrain was selling so well last year compared to its peers this year. As those issues clear up, the Terrain’s siblings have caught up to its sales numbers. With that being said, all three GMC SUVs are still selling well compared to other SUVs. While the Yukon and the Acadia are selling better than the Terrain is, the differences in their year-to-date sales aren’t huge.

GMC has sold about 42,000 units of the Yukon this year, followed by 40,000 units of the Acadia, and then 37,000 units of the Terrain. The Acadia’s sales numbers were propped up by a very strong showing in the second quarter, and there’s no guarantee it can maintain that momentum.

As such, it’s not crazy to think that the Terrain can be GMC’s best-selling SUV by the end of the year.
