We currently live in a world where large SUVs and crossovers currently dominate the marketplace, however, small sedans like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class exists for those looking for something smaller and luxurious. The A-Class competes with the likes of the BMW 2 Series, Audi A3, and Acura ILX, but it offers the type of elegance that could beat out any of those on a good day. And while it does have a lot to offer, is the Mercedes-Benz A-Class actually worth buying?

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is an entry-level luxury sedan

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class made its American debut for the 2019 model year. The car is actually in its fourth generation, however, other parts of the world, like Europe and Asia, got to experience the last three, most of which was in the form a hatchback. Us Americans, however, get the A-Class in the form of a small sedan that’s broken down into two models: the A220 and the AMG A 35.

The Mercedes-Benz A220 comes with a host of standard features that most prospective buyers are looking for. Some of the most notable features include 17-inch wheels, automatic LED headlights, a panoramic moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, and heated side mirrors. If you want a more upscale A220, then there are some extra option boxes that you need to check off. And if you want all-wheel drive, then that will cost an extra $2,000, as front-wheel drive is the standard A220 configuration.

The Mercedes-Benz A220 has a lot of options

In true Mercedes style, the A220 has a lot of options, most of which can be added a la carte. For example, you can add features like a heated steering wheel, rear spoiler, or heated and ventilated front seats separately and you can also choose from a couple of different option packages. The Premium package includes features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power side mirrors, and keyless entry, while the Multimedia package includes built-in navigation and speed-limit assist.

One of the less-competitive details of the Mercedes-Benz A220 is that the driver-assist features aren’t standard like they are in other rivals. In order to get the host of driver assists, you would need to opt for the Driver Assistance package that includes features like adaptive cruise control, active steering assist, active blind spot assist, and emergency stop assist.

If you need assistance with parking, then you can also get the Park Assistance package, which includes a 360-degree camera and parking sensors. For a sportier feel, there’s also the AMG package that comes with a host of sporty dress-up features like sport seats, a sport steering, and aluminum pedals. However, if you want some actual added power then, we suggest stepping up to the AMG A35.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG A 35 offers more power

The standard A220 model comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque and is connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. According to Mercedes-Benz, you can expect to get up to 60 mph in about 7 seconds.

But if more power is what you crave, then you’ll have to opt for the AMG A 35, which is powered by a more potent turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that is good for 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and can get to 60 in 4.6 seconds. Although, you’ll have to spend around $10,000 more to get that kind of performance.

Is the Mercedes-Benz A-Class worth buying?

When it’s all said and done, the Mercedes-Benz A220 starts at around $32,000 and goes up to around $52,000 with all of the option boxes checked. Both the Audi A3 and BMW 2 Series have higher starting prices and can be optioned out the same way for a little less than what the A220 tops out at. However, those other two cars are also geared more toward performance as opposed to luxurious comfort like the A-Class.

That being said, if you’re looking for the softer side of luxury and only need a small sedan to go from point A to B, then the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a great choice. But if performance is what you need, then its rivals may suit you better. Or you can just get the AMG A 35.
