When the off-road driving range of the slew of EV trucks being offered isn’t enough for you, Jeep brings you an alternative. The latest addition to the brand lineup is the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe, which is a plug-in hybrid SUV with the off-road chops you’re after. No longer will you be limited by an electric powertrain; instead, if you can bring some extra fuel along with you, you’ll have what you need to keep on driving for as long as you desire.

Every 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe will use the same powertrain

No matter the trim you select, and there are five of them, you’ll have the same powertrain when you take this rugged off-road SUV out on the trails. Car and Driver tells us the powertrain is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that teams up with two electric motors and a 400-volt/17kWh battery. This setup gives you 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque which is routed to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Have a short drive in mind? This Grand Cherokee 4xe can travel 25 miles on electric power before ever using a sip of fuel. Of course, this Jeep includes the Quadra Trac II 4WD system as part of the standard package, giving you the most important feature for your wilderness adventures.

Which Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe trim will you drive?

The new Grand Cherokee 4xe is offered in five trims: base, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights provided by Jalopnik of each trim.

Base trim

This base model is well-equipped to be an SUV that not only has the off-road prowess you need but plenty of comfort to make driving easy for you every day. With this trim, you’ll enjoy:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Selec-Terrain traction management system with five modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand)
  • 10.25-inch infotainment screen
  • Driver assistance safety package
  • Panoramic Moonroof

Trailhawk trim

Moving up to the second trim level brings you the Trailhawk name, which has been used by Jeep to signify a model that has excellent features for trail riding. This model adds more to the mix with:

  • Quadra-Drive II 4WD system with low range crawl control
  • A rear electronic limited-slip differential
  • Quadra-Lift air suspension
  • Off-road camera with 360 degrees of visibility

The Quadra-Lift air suspension system gives you 4.7 inches of wheel travel and the capability to handle water that can be up to two feet deep.

Overland trim

If the thought of an Overland model brings you to a place where you’re driving for several miles without being interrupted by roads, you’ll understand the features added to this trim, which are:

  • Quadra-Trac II 4WD system
  • Optional Off-Road package
    • Skid plates
    • Hill Descent control
    • All-terrain tires
    • 18-inch wheels
    • Quadra-Drive II
  • Nappa leather upholstery
  • 19-speaker/950-watt McIntosh audio system
  • Ambient cabin lighting

Summit trim

Are you looking for more luxury in your Jeep SUV? If so, the Summit trim gives you what you want for a high-class drive. This trim includes:

Finally, the top trim of this new Grand Cherokee is the Summit Reserve trim. With this trim, you’ll have a Jeep that is truly sophisticated, which gives you the best you can find from this brand. This trim includes:

  • Quilted Palermo leather upholstery
  • Massaging, heated, cooled seats in both rows
  • 10.2-inch screen for the front passenger
  • Real walnut wood trim

Nothing this good comes cheap

How much will you spend to enjoy the benefits of driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe? The base model will set you back $57,700, with the Summit Reserve asking you to spend $74,300. That’s a lot of cash for an off-road SUV. That being said, we do see other off-road-oriented vehicles heading to the market for a much higher price. One example is the new GMC Hummer EV which opens at more than $105,000.
