The most luxurious SUV doesn’t belong to any luxury brand names. Instead, we see it among a collection of hardcore off-road SUVs from a tough and rugged brand name. That’s right; the most luxurious SUV is the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Move over Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, and Genesis; you’ve lost out on this award. The Grand Wagoneer is a full-size ultra-luxury SUV that offers massive quality features and impressive technology to give you an amazing drive on any road.
Luxury Utility Vehicle of the Year: 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
The AutoGuide.com awards are in, and this Jeep takes home the award as the Luxury Utility Vehicle of the Year. This is a big SUV that has something for everyone. The cabin area brings you smooth Palermo leather, impressive chrome accents, and beautiful open-pore wood.
Those that love tech items will find it in this big Jeep SUV. Items including a 23-speaker McIntosh sound system turns the cabin area into a concert hall. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system presents you with one of the fastest systems in the industry to offer a fantastic experience on the road. When driving this SUV at night, you’ll enjoy the benefits of the night vision display that tells you what’s moving around in front of you, even when you can’t see it with your eyes.
An early contender for this award was the Genesis GV70, but all bets were off once the Jeep Grand Wagoneer arrived on the scene. The Grand Wagoneer is an SUV that could be the most comfortable place to enjoy a road trip with your family.
What we don’t like about the Grand Wagoneer
Awards are often glowing statements about the positives of a vehicle, but there has to be something that would make you avoid driving this big Jeep. We can think of two items that might make you look for a different vehicle: the price and the fuel mileage.
The Grand Wagoneer starts at $89,995 and increases from there. That might put this SUV out of your price range, especially if you weren’t expecting luxury prices from a Jeep.
The fuel mileage is one of the lowest in the full-size SUV class. When you’re not towing a trailer, you’ll have 13 city/18 hwy mpg. Attach a trailer, and your fuel mileage drops significantly. The low fuel economy is caused partly because of the full-time 4WD system of this big SUV.
What does this Jeep bring to your drive?
If you see the price and fuel mileage and still want to buy the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, there’s a lot to admire about this big luxury SUV. According to Kelley Blue Book, this SUV offers:
- Quadra-Lift air suspension
- Rugged off-road ability
- Electronic limited-slip rear differential
- 24 inches of water fording
- Upscale interior with impressive materials
- Quad-zone climate controls
- 10,000 pounds of towing
- Full suite of driver and safety assist items
The Grand Wagoneer is a brand-new full-size luxury SUV that rides on a body-on-frame chassis to give you the size and capability desired.
Currently, we don’t see a diesel version or a hybrid powertrain, but that’s not too surprising. The first model year for a vehicle is often when we’re introduced to it while the brand team works on variations meant for the following years. A diesel powertrain makes sense; other full-size SUVs now offer this option for maximum power and fuel efficiency.
How much does a Jeep Grand Wagoneer cost?
We mentioned the starting price, but this big SUV can reach levels that take you into six figures. The Grand Wagoneer Series III starts at $104,845. If you want the most comfort, convenience, and tech items you can find, that’s the price you’ll pay.
What’s the difference between a Wagoneer and a Grand Wagoneer?
Don’t get fooled into thinking the Grand model is a larger SUV; it’s not. The Wagoneer is the more affordable version of the two, but it doesn’t give you the luxury qualities of the Grand Wagoneer. If you want to drive the most luxurious Jeep SUV ever made, you’ll need to take the Grand Wagoneer for a drive.
This Jeep is playing a different game
Typically, we think of the Jeep SUVs as capable, off-road, rugged, and tough vehicles from the mainstream class. The Grand Wagoneer reaches into the luxury market and leaves the rest of the Jeep lineup behind. You can’t compare this big SUV with anything from Chevrolet, Ford, or Toyota, because it’s that much better than those brands offer. Instead, you have to compare it to Cadillac, BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz models. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer plays chess while the other mainstream brands continue playing checkers.
