Get ready to see more Chevy Silverado trucks on the road. In new sales figures for the first half of 2022 Chevy is trouncing the competition and gaining on the traditional sales leader Ford for new truck sales. The Chevy Silverado is now the second-best selling new full-sized truck in America. Ford keeps its No. 1 sales spot with the F-150, but Chevy is gaining.

So far in 2022, Chevy has sold 261,828 Silverado trucks. That was enough to eclipse the Ram brand, which started the year strong but fell off. Of the seven full-sized trucks you can buy today, Ford, Chevy and then Ram beat GMC, Toyota, Nissan and Hummer, in that order according to research firm Car Sales Base.

Interestingly, combined with the 118,938 GMC Sierra trucks sold in the first half of the year, GM is now the top seller of full-sized trucks.

The Silverado was significantly updated for 2022

As a rule of thumb, any time a manufacturer updates a vehicle, it sells better. For 2022, the Silverado saw a big update the brought it up-market. The big differences in the new 2022 Silverado include a new grille and a new interior. The 2023 Silverado gets a couple of small updates, too.

The new interior on all trims includes a new horizontal instrument panel and a new center console with a 13.4-inch touchscreen. Under the new grille, running lights now do a funky animated walk-up dance when you approach with the key. Also, GM’s Super Cruise is available on the High Country luxury version. Of course, Chevy did add new trim packages for 2022, including the new flagship ZR2 version, which brings new off-road capability.

Ford’s F-150 is still No. 1

For decades, the Ford F-150 has held the No. 1 spot as the top-selling vehicle of any kind in North America. This year the F-150’s sales have slipped some, but it still holds the top spot. We’re expecting some mild mid-cycle updates for the Ford F-150 for 2023, but it was fully new for 2021. The 2022 Ford F-150 starts at $31,520 for a basic work truck but can be upgraded to a full luxury truck in the Platinum and Limited trims that sell for $63,100 and $77,625 respectively.

For 45 years, Ford has sold more trucks than any other manufacturer and the trucks even hold their value on the used market. So far in 2022 the F-150 looks poised to hold that top spot, but Chevy and Ram are constantly gunning at Ford in the lucrative full-size truck market.
