More Ford Recalls For Bronco, Explorer, Edge, Transit, Lincoln Navigator and Aviator
Unfortunately, Ford is right on pace to, again, top the list of most recalls in 2023, especially with today’s announcement. Ford will recall a large swath of Bronco, Explorer, Edge, Transit van, Lincoln Navigator, and Aviator models for various faults. It’s a long list of varying years between 2018 and 2024, so let’s start with the largest recall first.
Ford is recalling almost 170,000 vehicles that take in 2021 Bronco, 2020 to 2023 Lincoln Aviator, 2018 to 2021 Lincoln Navigator, and 2023 Transit van models. The reason is over images from the rear camera. They can flash blue or otherwise images that are obscure when in Reverse. There are several issues with either the camera hardware, a wiring retention fault, or faulty Image Processing Module-B software. Dealers will begin replacing cameras in October.
What are the other two recalls for?
Ford is recalling 2023 Edge SUVs over right-hand headlights that display too much glare to oncoming drivers. Technically, the issue is with the headlight exceeding the linearity and/or photometric intensity that U.S. standards allow. Over 8,500 Ford Edge models are in this recall. Dealers will begin replacing right-hand headlights starting in October.
The last recall is for a much lower number of vehicles. Ford is recalling just 10 2023 Explorers with the 2.3-liter GTDI engine. These engines may exhibit turbocharger oil supply line o-rings that show cracks. Two safety concerns are that leaking oil may ignite from dripping on hot engine components and that the loss of oil will damage or destroy the engine.
How many recalls are there so far in 2023?
Ford continues to have recall issues and is leading all other manufacturers in the number of recalls. It currently sits at 42. This comes on the heels of it leading to recalls in both 2022 and 2021. One of those recalls was for an almost identical issue with rear-view cameras affecting 382,000 Aviator, Explorer, and Lincoln Corsair models.
In all, these recalls have taken in 4.6 million cars and trucks so far this year. The next highest number of recalls belongs to Stellantis, with 33. The Stellantis recalls include 2.1 million vehicles overall. The most egregious of its 2023 recalls was for almost 900,000 F-150s over electric parking brake problems.
How many recalls did Ford have last year?
Last year, Ford issued 67 recalls that included almost every model it made, involving 8.6 million vehicles. In 2021, it had 53 recalls that took in almost 5.4 million vehicles. Ford has been on a roll with such popular models as the Mustang Mach-E and Bronco, but the continual issuing of recalls could have a negative effect on sales as more and more make headlines.
