Chevrolet’s recent sedan landscape included a couple of the most common domestic family sedans on the road: the Chevrolet Malibu and Impala. However, the two are separated by classification and time, with the Malibu enduring as the Bow Tie’s last sedan. So, between the midsized Chevy Malibu and full-size Impala, which used family sedan is right for you? Moreover, are some model years, like the 2020 Chevrolet Impala and 2022 Malibu, long-lasting used car prospects?

What’s the difference between a Chevrolet Malibu and Impala?

The Chevrolet Malibu is the Bow Tie’s midsized sedan option, while the now-discontinued Impala was the marque’s last full-size option. For instance, the 2020 Impala, the namesake’s final model year, is longer than a comparably-aged Malibu.

In addition to the extra length, the Impala has more cargo volume than a modern Malibu. However, what used Chevrolet Malibu models like the 2020 and 2021 iteration lack in cargo volume, they made up for in fuel economy and price. For instance, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) says a used 2020 Chevrolet Malibu LS with average mileage has a fair value of $20,567. However, a 2020 Chevrolet Impala LT demands an extra $5,000.

Furthermore, the Malibu’s patently anemic 160-horsepower 1.5L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine might not win many drag races. However, the mill can get as much as 36 mpg at highway speeds, around eight more than the Impala’s 3.6L V6.

A used Chevrolet Impala has the potential to last well over 200,000 miles. For instance, the Impala snagged the No. 2 spot in iSeeCars’ list of the longest-lasting used cars on the market. The Chevy Impala has an average potential lifespan of 230,343, just behind the Toyota Avalon’s 245,710.

Of course, those figures represent average odometer readings for high-mileage vehicles, not the maximum distance a model could potentially cover.

Like the full-size Chevrolet Impala, the midsize Malibu has the potential to last between 200,000 and 250,000 miles. Of course, owners will get the most extended lifespans out of their Chevy sedans with proper care, maintenance, and adherence to service intervals.

Is Impala or Malibu better?

The Chevrolet Impala is larger, more powerful, and offers more cargo volume than the Malibu. However, a used Malibu boasts better overall fuel economy and a lower starting price point.

Moreover, with models still in production, it’s easier for Chevy fans to find a used Malibu with some of its 3-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty intact.
