Subaru is an automaker popular for making great SUVs that are both capable and practical. Here’s a look at four of the best Subaru SUVs car shoppers should consider when looking for a new SUV.

1. Subaru Crosstrek is the best Subaru SUV to buy

According to MotorTrend, the best Subaru SUV is the Subaru Crosstrek. It received an overall score of 9.2 out of 10, making it the best model in the subcompact SUV segment. This subcompact Subaru SUV starts at about $23,600 and provides drivers with a balanced mix of features. It starts with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and gets 152 hp, with an optional 2.5-liter engine that gets 182 hp instead.

The Crosstrek comes with a six-speed manual, and like every other Subaru, it gets all-wheel drive as standard and an optional CVT. When paired with the CVT, the standard engine gets 31 mpg combined, which is decent for an SUV. The subcompact SUV has a max cargo capacity of 55 cu-ft and has many smart safety features.

2. The Subaru Outback

All the other best Subaru SUVs are tied in terms of their score, including the Subaru Outback. It received a score of 8.8 out of 10, which made it the highest-rated midsize SUV with a starting price tag of just over $28,000. It starts with a 182-hp 2.5-liter engine, and drivers can swap that out for a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that gets 260 hp instead.

The standard engine gets 30 mpg combined, and the optional turbo engine only gets about 27 mpg combined. If owners opt for the Wilderness trim, the turbo engine’s fuel economy drops even further to 24 mpg combined. That said, the Outback is well-equipped for off-road adventures, and it’s great for daily driving as well. With the seats folded down, it tops out at 76 cu-ft of space.

3. Subaru Ascent

The Subaru Ascent’s 8.8 out of 10 score made it the second-best option in the three-row SUV segment. It starts at about $34,000, and the Japanese automaker only gave the Subaru one engine option. It’s the same 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that the Outback could be equipped with. But since the Ascent is the largest Subaru on the market, its fuel economy is only about 23 mpg combined.

However, that size comes with some obvious benefits. The Ascent’s three rows of seats allow owners to seat up to eight people, but the third row of seats isn’t that spacious. The average adult won’t be too comfortable sitting in them. The Subaru SUV also has up to 87 cu-ft of cargo space. Its infotainment system is also large, as it comes standard with an 11.6-inch touchscreen.

4. Subaru Forester is still one of the best Subaru SUVs

Finally, there’s the Subaru Forester, and its 8.8 out of 10 score made it the second-best compact SUV on the market. That being said, MotorTrend gave the 2022 model year of the Forester that score, and the site hasn’t reviewed the 2023 version just yet. The 2023 model is very similar to the 2022 version though, so its score shouldn’t be that different.

This compact SUV starts at about $26,500 and has an 182-hp 2.5-liter engine. This allows the Subaru to get 30 mpg combined. The main benefit of the Forester, however, is its interior. It’s spacious, and the ride quality is smooth. It also tops out at 74 cu. ft. of cargo space despite being a compact SUV.
