However, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe does gain an edge for beginning under $50,000. Also, the Tahoe was just redesigned. It has a fresh face and new interior, leaving the Ford Expedition to feel outdated.
But you can’t count the Ford Expedition out just yet. It brings many positives to the table, including a slightly better fuel economy and can tow more. Let’s take a look at reasons to choose the Chevy Tahoe instead.
1. The Chevy Tahoe has a better interior
According to CARANDDRIVER, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe has a new and improved interior with plenty of comfort and space. But according to Edmunds, the Ford Expedition has some work to do.
The Expedition has a bulky feeling interior with a heavy button design. It can be difficult to figure out where certain buttons are located, and it often requires a second glance. Also, visibility is blocked by massive windshield pillars, causing drivers to rely on the backup camera heavily.
Also, the Ford Expedition has an interior that feels a little cheap with the use of hard, plastic materials. This can be a bummer when you spend $50k on an SUV. Meanwhile, the Chevy Tahoe has a modern and luxurious feel.
Both of these family haulers have comfortable seats, with easy to access rows in the back. However, the Chevy Tahoe recently got larger and now has more space. It provides up to 122.9 cubic feet of cargo space while the Ford Expedition maxes out at 104.6 cubic feet.
2. The Chevy Tahoe drives better
The 2021 Chevy Tahoe has a rear-independent suspension for enhanced comfort and off-roading abilities. Rivals, including the Ford Expedition, have been updating their suspension setups to include more comfort.
Plus, the Chevy Tahoe uses adaptive dampers for a quiet cabin and smooth ride. Because it now has a longer interior, the smoother ride is noticed by passengers too. Also, there is less vibration that can be felt from the engine.
Edmunds noted that the new independent suspension provides better handling. The steering is now more precise and responsive. Meanwhile, the handling on the Ford Expeditionisn’t its strong suit, and the brakes are slow, according to J.D Power.
Edmunds also found that the 2020 Ford Expedition allows for more noise in the cabin and the 22-inch tires tend to have a choppy ride on rougher roads. They recommend going with a different tire package.
3. The Chevy Tahoe has more engine options
The Ford Expedition comes with one engine option, which is a 3.5-liter V6 that pumps out 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. This is a nice amount of power as the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 lb.
However, the Chevy Tahoe provides your choice between a 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engine, with a diesel option available. The 6.2-liter V8 engine pumps out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Despite having more engine power, the Chevy Tahoe can only tow up to 8,400 lb.
