The Chevy Tahoe is consistently hailed as one of the best large SUVs you can buy. It’s true that the Tahoe is a standout in its class but there are other options worth considering like the Nissan Armada. The Armada may not be as popular as the Tahoe, but its sleek exterior and performance capability make it worth considering too. Here’’s what you should know about these two options.

Performance and capability

One of the best aspects of the 2020 Armada is its performance. The SUV comes with a 5.6-liter V8 engine that generates a 394 horsepower. You will find that the Armada offers plenty of power and handles bumps in the road with grace.

The 2020 Tahoe isn’t as graceful on the road as the Armada. However, it does come standard with a peppy 5.3-liter V8 engine. While the Tahoe’s standard V8 is lively, you should know that it feels sluggish at times, even as you accelerate to higher speeds. If you want more power and quicker acceleration, you will have to go to the Tahoe’s highest trim level. On the highest trim, you get a 6.2-liter V8 that makes a 420 horsepower.

Large SUVs aren’t known for being fuel-efficient and both the Armada and the Tahoe have very poor fuel economy ratings. The Armada gets a combined 14 mpg and the Tahoe has a slightly higher fuel economy rating with a combined 16 mpg.

Cabin comfort

Both the Armada and the Tahoe offer upscale feeling interiors. The Armada’s interior is actually very similar to its luxurious counterpart, the Infiniti QX80. Some say that the Tahoe is too heavy on the plastic finishings on the inside but it’s not a huge drawback.

Both of these SUVs are comfortable and accommodating. But if you plan on hauling a very large brood, you will probably want to go with the Tahoe. The Tahoe can tote up to nine passengers depending on the configuration. The Armada can carry up to eight and doesn’t have as much cargo room compared to the Tahoe. Although, neither of these SUVs boasts a particularly spacious third-row seat so those are better left for kids.

In-car electronics

Both the Armada and the Tahoe can be upgraded with rear-seat entertainment. But if modern infotainment is a must-have for you, the Armada is likely to disappoint you. It doesn’t come with features like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. They aren’t even available as upgrades.

The Armada does come with a large 8-inch touchscreen display but the graphics are hard to read. Oppositely, Tahoe does pretty well when it comes to infotainment. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard and so does satellite radio.

The final verdict

2020 Nissan Armada | Nissan

Both the Armada and Tahoe have earned good crash-test safety scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Consumer Reports also gave both SUVs the same average predicted reliability score. The Armada and Tahoe are both solid, family-friendly choices.

We’d say that if you don’t care about infotainment, the Armada might be the right choice for you. It offers a more graceful ride compared to the Tahoe. However, if you want more power and basic infotainment is a dealbreaker, go with the Tahoe.
