The Tesla Model X revolutionized the EV world as one of the first useful electric SUVs. Although Tesla gave this SUV some unique features, such as the Gullwing rear doors, it stood for a few years as the only three-row electric SUV. Today, the Model X is being overshadowed by the onslaught of electric SUVs hitting the market. This, along with its extremely high price, might be why the Tesla Model X isn’t selling as well, but at least three EVs are selling worse than this Tesla.

What are the sales figures for the Tesla Model X?

Tesla makes four models, and the Model X is by far the lowest-selling model of the group. Through the end of September, only 14,299 versions of the Model X were sold in the United States, which is less than any single month of Model Y sales figures, according to Good Car Bad Car.

The Model X is the lowest-selling Tesla, but it’s also the most expensive, with a starting MSRP of $79,990. Comparatively, the Model S is the next highest at a $74,990 starting MSRP.

Although the Model X has sold fewer than 15,000 models so far this year, three EVs have experienced even lower sales figures.

How many Subaru Solterra models have been sold?

The Subaru Solterra is a relatively new electric SUV with no previous year figures for comparison. Still, this new Subaru EV has been sold to 6,973 customers through the end of September.

The Solterra comes in three trim levels, with the most expensive Touring model starting at a much lower price than the Tesla Model X. Despite the lower price, the Solterra has yet to catch on.

What are the sales figures for the Volvo C40?

Another low-selling EV is the 2023 Volvo C40, which has only been driven off the lot in the hands of a new owner 6,090 times this year. Unlike the Solterra, the C40 has previous year sales figures for comparison.

Compared to last year, the C40 has increased sales by 114.97% from 2,833 models, but the paltry total figures are still alarming. Still, purchasing the C40 Recharge Ultimate costs $60,100, a relative value compared to the Tesla Model X.

It’s a different story with the Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 has sold more models than the Tesla Model X so far this year, with sales figures at 16,340, but this represents a slight decline from the same time last year when 16,501 models had been sold through September.

Sales of the EV6 have slowed progressively throughout the year from a high of 3,156 in March to a low of 1,440 models in September. The EV6 sale decline could be due to the addition of new electric SUVs entering the market. The exciting EV6 GT starts at $61,600, which is still a bargain compared to the Tesla Model X.

Price isn’t everything in the EV world

Although the Tesla Model X is one of the most expensive electric SUVs offered, it has higher sales figures than the Subaru Solterra and Volvo C40 and is out pacing the Kia EV6 through September. Will any of these electric SUVs become sales leaders in this new market?
