Those of a certain age will recognize the headline as a shameless attempt at nostalgia. I am one of those people. Regardless, GM brings electrification to the road with two impressive all-electric pickup trucks, which do more than power your ride. Similar to the Ford F-150 lightning before them, the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV can power your home through the vehicle-to-home (V2H) system.

What is bi-directional charging?

V2H isn’t new technology; its foundation lies in simply turning an electric vehicle into a power generator for your home. Unlike traditional gas-powered generators, an EV can silently send power to the home, avoiding the noisy operation of a traditional generator.

Why use the GM electric trucks?

The Chevy Silverado EV and GM Sierra EV have large battery packs. This means more power going to the home, making it easier to keep the lights on and the refrigerator running. Smaller EVs might not have enough power to keep a home electrified for more than a few hours, but these GM electric trucks certainly do.

How can homeowners receive the benefits of the GM V2H system?

The new bundle must be installed for homeowners to benefit from the V2H program. This system includes an EV charging station from Qmerit. The Qmerit team covers the cost of the electrical work and obtaining necessary permits for the upgrade. They also communicate with the customer’s utility company in case they have any requirements.

Although the GM electric pickups are ideal for the V2H program, most GM electric vehicles are part of this program. CleanTechnica reports that Qmerit installed a home EV charging station for one of their employees in 2022 when she purchased a Chevy Bolt.

Should you use an electric vehicle to power your home?

Although EVs are much more expensive than an at-home generator, it is an excellent option. If you plan to change from a gas-powered truck to one of GM’s new models, the Chevy Silverado EV or GMC Sierra EV can double as transportation and an at-home power generator.

Using an electric truck to power your home means you’ve got a set of wheels and a large battery filled with electricity that can power your home for several days, if necessary. Most homeowners only use their at-home generators once or twice a year. This means the machine sits in the garage waiting to be used. With an electric truck, you’ll have something you can use daily and still power you home when necessary.

The GM wonder twins, the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV, serve this dual purpose perfectly. My attempt at nostalgia does not.
