The traditional sedan has largely disappeared from American roads. That statement might seem dramatic, but crossover SUVs now make up about 45% of vehicle sales in America. However, despite compact SUVs’ generous cargo space and wide range of capabilities, the midsize sedan is still favored among consumers looking for a car with a trunk and a lower ride height. One of the remaining midsize sedans is the 2023 Chevy Malibu. 

However, this aging model is mediocre compared to the competition. Here are three cons that might have you skipping the Malibu.

The 2023 Chevy Malibu is slow off the line

Although the Malibu offers decent styling, it lacks power under the hood. The 2023 model comes in four trim levels, but all have the same engine — a 1.5-liter four-cylinder — paired with a continuously variable transmission. With only 163 hp, the Malibu accelerates leisurely, cruising to 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, Car and Driver reports.

For better performance with similar features, check out the Kia K5 GT or Hyundai Sonata N Line. Their 290-hp engines offer nearly double the Malibu’s power.

The 2023 Chevy Malibu has limited visibility

According to Edmunds, outward visibility is a significant issue with the 2023 Chevy Malibu. Understandably, visibility issues are primarily due to stricter safety requirements. Pillars in vehicles have become larger and more reinforced to make cars safer. 

However, other midsize sedans offer better visibility than the Malibu. For instance, Consumer Reports previously ranked the Subaru Legacy as the top-performing midsize sedan in that category.

The Malibu’s interior is dated

The current ninth-generation Malibu entered production in 2015 for the 2016 model year. It has largely remained the same, aside from mild upgrades and refreshes.

The 2023 Malibu still provides a good selection of tech features, including an impressive touchscreen, easy-to-read gauges, and smartphone integration. It also offers a heated steering wheel and heated and ventilated seats. Although it isn’t the most technologically advanced car, it has everything you expect from a new vehicle. 

However, if brand-new tech is a priority in your new vehicle search, consider the 2023 Honda Accord, Kia K5, or Hyundai Sonata.

What vehicles are like the Chevy Malibu?

If you’re not set on buying a 2023 Chevy Malibu, several other midsize cars are worth considering. The Honda Accord, Kia K5, Toyota Camry, and Hyundai Sonata are excellent alternatives.
