With the automotive market still experiencing supply and component shortages, consumers are heading to used car lots to find their family’s next daily driver. Used cars offer huge advantages over new cars. While they may not have that new car smell and single-digit mileage, used cars are a cheaper option when compared to new cars. And with new car lots dealing with supply issues, used car lots have more supply to choose from.

Autotrader released its top choices for best used midsize sedans under $20,000. With just about every new car on the market starting at over $20,000 MSRP, Autotrader’s list shows us the car model with the most value. You may be surprised which car won the top prize in this midsize category.

Autotrader’s top choice for best used midsize sedan: 2019 Chevrolet Malibu

Despite fierce competition, the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu received top honors from Autotrader as the best used midsize sedan you can get used for under $20,000. According to Autotrader, the big factor that set it apart from the competition is the car’s distinguished design.

The exterior design puts forth a serious, timeless demeanor that conforms well to any situation, whether it is in the carpool lane or the parking garage for a highrise. The roomy interior is full of technology with Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto standard; this is presented through an 8-inch touch screen.

With an array of trim levels to choose from, the Chevy Malibu remains one of the best values in the midsize segment.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu specs and features

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu can be found in six different trim levels including L, LS, RS, LT, Malibu Premier, and Malibu Hybrid. The first four trim levels come standard with a 1.5L four-cylinder engine paired with an automatic transmission that outputs around 160 horsepower. Due to that small 1.5L engine, the Malibu gets fantastic fuel economy at 29 mpg city and 36 mpg highway; it gives this roomy midsize car near-city car efficiency without the cramped dimensions.

The Malibu Premier trim is the highest trim level for this model and comes with an upgraded 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine that makes an impressive 250 horsepower; fuel efficiency is a little less at 22 mpg city and 32 mpg on the highway. The extra power makes it worth it if looking for a flashy midsize sleeper.

The Malibu Hybrid is another option, and the hybrid drivetrain gets around 49 mpg city; this model typically costs more and will fall above the $20,000 price limit.

With fantastic features, a modern design, as well as excellent fuel economy and performance in its Premier trim, the Malibu performs well as Autotrader’s best used midsize sedan. The 2019 Malibu’s design was so well received and lasted through the current 2023 model year. This means a used 2019 Malibu purchase gives all of the value found on a brand-new model, for a fraction of the price.
