Volkswagen has just released camouflage teasers of the upcoming 2024 Tiguan small SUV. It won’t be revealed until later this summer, but between the teaser photo dump and what we know, we can piece together what to expect from the mostly new Tiguan. It’s heavily revised, with the distinction of being the last gas-powered compact SUV VW will ever make.

The first thing you notice, despite the camo, is that the Tiguan is moving away from the previous sharp-edged styling to embrace more organic body surfaces. This follows Volkswagen’s earlier ID electric car designs. The front fascia is mostly a rehash of some of its current models.

What size is the 2024 VW Tiguan?

First, the IQ Light HD Matrix advanced lighting technology is new for the 2024 version of the compact SUV. This comes in conjunction with the LED lightbar running from the left headlight to the right one. The lower grille and vertical vents are somewhat derivative.

Above the beltline, the top and DLO are downright common to many small SUVs over the past decade. The same goes for the rear, which has very little to distinguish it from a 2008 Nissan Rogue or similar compact SUV. So the newly sculpted body is the only thing that carries the exterior visuals into new territory.

The 2024 Tiguan wheelbase is 105.5 inches, with an overall length of 179.2 inches and a width of 64.6 inches. So it’s slightly larger in every dimension but the wheelbase, which stays the same as the previous model.

Is there an EV version of the 2024 VW Tiguan?

The Volkswagen Tiguan is built on the MQB Evo platform, an updated version of several previous VW models. So it is sticking with a gas/hybrid powertrain, with no EV version in the works. For that, buyers can look to the ID.3 in Europe and ID.4, sold in several countries, including the U.S.

Its plug-in hybrid system now works with the 1.5-liter TSI Evo2 engine. Two versions will be available, either a 201 hp version or the 268 hp version with all-wheel drive. The more powerful version also offers an extended EV-only range of 62 miles.

VW says other engine options will be the 1.5-liter eTSI and 2.0-liter TSI. A 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine is also part of the European diesel line. Every engine option uses the DSG automatic transmission.

What are some of the new interior features?

Inside the 2024 VW Tiguan, a 15-inch touchscreen comes straight out of the ID.7 ev. Lower trims get the 12.9-inch screen. Drivers get a digital instrument cluster and head-up display. In an effort to improve its buggy steering wheel touch-sensitive controls, the automaker eliminated this feature.

To help enhance the user experience, illuminated slide controls, and shortcuts are physical rather than digital. The center console now features a large rotary knob, continuing the back-to-buttons strategy. Still, climate controls are part of the touchscreen.

Will the U.S. be getting the 2024 Tiguan?

Once in the seat, the driver and passenger can enjoy a multitude of ergoActive seat features. These include heating, ventilation, four-way lumbar support, and a 10-chamber massager. It’s also stepped it up with better-quality materials.

The U.S. version of the Tiguan was the Allspace, an extended wheelbase version. VW has discontinued the model here and isn’t saying much about the 2024 Tiguan’s chances of coming here. But that doesn’t mean there will be nothing available in this segment for U.S. customers. The Tayron, currently sold in China, could be making its way here as a Tiguan before 2025 as the Allspace successor.
