Volvo will continue earning its reputation for making safe cars and SUVs, but some recent IIHS awards were not as high as expected. Even as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety improves and changes the testing for Top Safety Pick awards, Volvo has kept up with most requirements. However, the 2024 Volvo XC60 and XC60 Recharge were tripped up by some new Top Safety Pick testing components.

Considering the 2024 Volvo XC60, you can always count on the high-quality design and composition of the brand’s popular SUVs. The 2024 Volvo XC60 and 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick award but fell short of the higher Top Safety Pick Plus designation. The SUVs recently underwent crash testing and earned high marks on most tests. The updated side impact test is one of the more recent changes to this testing.

The gasoline-powered and plug-in hybrid models earned a rating of “acceptable” on the new test. The Volvo SUV protected the driver in most cases but earned some mixed scores on the driver injury section. On other necessary tests like the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and other side tests, the 2024 XC60 protected the occupants.

Additionally, all trim levels of the Volvo SUV use LED reflector lights. These headlights provided good visibility in most conditions, except during sharp turns. Volvo’s headlights earned an “acceptable” score for all trim levels.

Is the Volvo XC60 safe?

The 2024 Volvo XC60 and Recharge are safe and earned high marks on many tests. Volvo’s front crash prevention system for vehicle-to-pedestrian collision tests during the day earned a “superior” score, while the night version earned a slightly lower “advanced.” The XC60 was able to avoid a collision at 12 and 25 mph for all of the obstacles.

It seems that the midsize luxury SUV was able to avoid collisions at night while using the high beams since the regular headlights were not enough. The SUVs nearly avoided the collision and slowed the vehicle down.

The NHTSA has not tested the recharge yet, but the XC60 earned a five-star overall safety rating. That included five-star safety ratings in the frontal and side crash tests. Even though the 2024 XC60 missed out on some higher ratings and awards, both versions of the SUV are safe and well-built. Some of these strenuous tests aim only to make the roads safer for everyone, whether you are in the Volvo or in another vehicle around it.
