Toyota recently introduced the Grand Highlander. Larger and more powerful than the Highlander, the Grand Highlander offers traditional gas-powered and hybrid versions. So, how does the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander compare to the Grand Highlander Hybrid?  

2024 Toyota Grand Highlander vs. Grand Highlander Hybrid: Powertrain specs

Toyota addressed consumer demand for a roomier three-row SUV by debuting the spacious Grand Highlander. This family hauler has a larger cargo area than the standard Highlander, an adult-friendly third row, and potent powertrains. Seven models are available. Three have a gas engine, while the other four sport hybrid setups. The seven trims are the XLE, Hybrid XLE, Limited, Hybrid Limited, Platinum, Hybrid MAX Limited, and Hybrid MAX Platinum. 

The base model of the 2024 Grand Highlander and Grand Highlander Hybrid are the XLE. Both have front-wheel drive. However, both can be upgraded to all-wheel drive for an extra $1,200.

As for engines, the XLE has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbo with an eight-speed transmission. In comparison, the Hybrid XLE packs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The XLE produces 265 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, while the Hybrid XLE harnesses 265 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. 

So although both versions make the same horsepower, the hybrid model boasts nearly 100 lb-ft of torque more.

Here’s how the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and Grand Highlander Hybrid differ in fuel economy

Expectedly, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is the winner in fuel economy. The Hybrid XLE gets an EPA-estimated 37 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 36 mpg combined. In comparison, the XLE gets 21 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. 

In addition, their fuel capacities are similar. The Hybrid XLE can hold 17.2 gallons, and the XLE has a 17.8-gallon tank.

For city drivers, the Grand Highlander Hybrid is the more fuel-efficient option. 

What are space, seating, and comfort like in both versions? 

When it comes to interior space, seating, and comfort, the two Grand Highlander versions are nearly identical. The XLE and Hybrid XLE seat seven passengers and offers 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space.

In addition, they have plenty of tech features, including Bluetooth, navigation, satellite radio, and keyless ignition. However, one notable standard amenity difference between these base models is that the Hybrid XLE comes with heated seats, while the regular XLE does not. 

The Hybrid XLE inches ahead of the XLE in torque, fuel economy, and standard amenities. However, those benefits come at a price. Toyota starts the XLE at $43,070, whereas the Hybrid XLE starts at $44,670. But that extra $1,600 might be worth it, though, because both models have the same standard warranty of three years/36,000 miles basic, five years/60,000 miles drivetrain, and two years of roadside assistance.
