The upcoming 2024 Ford Mustang GT is the latest V8-powered flagship sports car in the model’s seventh generation. Despite the Mustang’s ability to outlast its segment rivals, the beloved Blue Oval pony car has competition from an unlikely source: the international collaboration that is the 2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.0. So, how do the two taut, fast coupes compare?

Does the 2024 Mustang GT have a Coyote engine?

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT carries over the Coyote 5.0L V8 engine, like the post-facelift S197 and S550 GTs. However, the upcoming Mustang GT will produce 486 horsepower with the performance exhaust option, making it the most powerful GT in the model’s production history.

Moreover, the GT’s power reserves put the V8-powered coupe and convertible an impressive 104 ponies ahead of the 2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.0. However, the A90 Supra’s 3,343-lb curb weight makes it a much lighter contender on the track and street. As a result, it’s unlikely that the upcoming GT will outsprint the B58-powered Supra’s 3.7-second sprint to 60 mph.

What transmission will the 2024 Mustang GT have?

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT will have two transmission options: a quick-shifting 10-speed automatic and a six-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, the GT will carry over the Getrag-sourced MT-82 manual, a unit with a reputation for premature wear and issues.

On the other hand, the comparable 2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 will also have an automatic and manual transmission. However, the A90 Supra’s automatic transmission option is an eight-speed unit compared to the GT’s 10-speed gearbox. Still, even the row-your-own manual GR Supra 3.0 is good for a sub-4.0-second sprint to 60 mph.

How much will the 2024 GR Supra cost?

The 2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 will start at $55,595, around $8,960 more than the base-model 2.0L four-cylinder model. While the A90 Supra 3.0 is cheaper than a comparable Porsche 718 Cayman, it’s also pricier than a S650 Ford Mustang GT.

Make and model (2024)Starting price
Mustang GT Fastback$42,495
Mustang GT Premium$47,015
Mustang GT Premium Convertible$52,515
A90 GR Supra 3.0$55,595
A90 GR Supra 3.0 Premium$58,745
A90 GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition$65,470

Is the Mustang GT spacious?

The S650 Ford Mustang GT will have around 13.3 cubic feet of storage for the fastback model. However, the GT Convertible will drop its storage capacity to 10.3 cubic feet.

Still, even the S650 GT Convertible promises to accommodate more than a comparable A90 Supra. TrueCar says the A90 Supra has a cargo capacity of 10.2 cubic feet and no rear seats. Moreover, the Supra isn’t available as a convertible. Instead, fans who want a drop-top Supra will have to opt for a pricier BMW Z4.

The upcoming 2024 Ford Mustang GT from the new S650 generation is more powerful, affordable, and spacious than the Toyota GR Supra 3.0. However, it’s unlikely that the heavy, traction-limited pony car will keep pace with the razor-sharp Supra.
