The 2023 Ford Mustang GT is the last V8-powered model in the sixth-generation (S550) lineup alongside the Mach 1. However, even with vast power reserves, a trio of razor-sharp two-door sports cars will eagerly outrun the beloved American grand tourer. Better yet, all three share the same mill; the 2024 Toyota GR Supra, BMW Z4, and BMW M240i xDrive derive their power from the B58 inline six-cylinder engine. If you’re in the market for a muscle-bound Mustang alternative, one of these B58-powered sports cars could have you covered.

There’s no shortage of performance cars with the potential to outrun a 2023 Ford Mustang GT. However, a BMW-Toyota collaboration resulted in three sports cars that will easily outsprint the Mustang.

Make and model0-60 mphQuarter mileTop speed (Manufacturer)
2023 Ford Mustang GT (Auto)4.0 seconds12.1 seconds168 mph
2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.03.7 seconds12.4 seconds161 mph
2023 BMW M240i xDrive3.6 seconds12.1 seconds155 mph
2023 BMW Z4 m40i3.5 seconds12.0 seconds152 mph

The 2023 Ford Mustang GT loses 10 horsepower compared to earlier post-facelift models, like the 460-horsepower 2018 model. However, even with the loss of a few ponies, the GT Automatic will sprint to 60 mph in around 4.0 seconds. While that’s quicker than a comparable Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack, it’s not fast enough to contend with the B58-powered Z4, M240i, and Mk5 Supra.

What’s more, fans of a row-your-own driving experience will have more difficulty getting the MT82 Mustang to 60 mph as quickly as the 10-speed auto version. Of course, drivers will have a lot more fun telling the pony car what to do via six-speed manual.

Which vehicles have B58 engines?

The B58 is a favorite engine in the performance trims of BMW, powering coupes, sedans, convertibles, and SUVs. Here are just a few modern cars with the turbocharged 3.0L inline six-cylinder mill.

  • BMW M240i
  • BMW 340i
  • BMW 440i
  • BMW 740i
  • X3 M40i
  • X4 M40i
  • X5 40i
  • Mk5 Supra

The BMW B58 engine is a 3.0L inline-six cylinder mill that powers many BMW models in different states of tune, from the M240i to the 340i and 540i. Furthermore, the B58 replaced the N55 as a frequent installment in the marque’s lineup. However, a collaboration between Toyota and the Bavarian automaker led to the turbocharged B58 finding itself under the hood of the Mk5 Supra.

How powerful is the B58 in the M240i?

The 2023 BMW M240i xDrive produces 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque from its 3.0L B58 engine. Paired with grippy all-wheel drive (AWD), the 3,877-lb Bimmer is sure-footed enough to outsprint a Ford Mustang GT and a lighter Toyota GR Supra 3.0.

Moreover, the 2023 BMW Z4 and 2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 produce the same 382 horsepower as the M240i. Whichever badge you want on your two-door performance car, the melodic BMW mill will launch you faster than a Mustang GT with a 5.0L Coyote V8.

Further, while the next-gen S650 Mustang promises better performance, it carries over the same Coyote V8 mill and transmission options. As a result, the new pony car also won’t outsprint the B58 triplets.
