The 2023 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 is the fourth model year of the Mk5 (Mk V) model’s tenure. In that time, the Supra has evolved into a serious contender in the international sports car market. However, BMW has a long history of razor-sharp M cars, including the new 2023 BMW M2. So, what could the GR Supra possibly have that the pricier, more powerful M2 doesn’t?

What does the Mk5 Supra do better than a new 2023 BMW M2?

While the 2023 BMW M2 is a muscular, angry driver’s car, it isn’t alone in the performance coupe landscape; the Mk5 Supra 3.0 is a GAZOO Racing alternative to the M2 with a lower starting price, lower weight, and higher fuel economy figures.

2023 BMW M2$63,1953,745 lbs19 mpg

Of course, the 2023 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 doesn’t do everything better than the M2. For instance, the M2’s 71 extra horsepower is enough to make any fan smile, all the while getting similar acceleration figures to the Mk5 Supra 3.0 with a manual transmission. Moreover, the M2’s abundance of mechanical grip is good for at least an extra 0.01 g on a 300-ft skidpad compared to the lighter Supra, per Car and Driver

However, even with a starting price point north of $50,000, the GR Supra 3.0 is a performance bargain. For instance, the 2023 model is $8,500 cheaper than the BMW M2 Coupe. However, both cars have comparable performance figures and a joyful manual transmission

The 2023 Toyota GR Supra (Mk5) has a curb weight of around 3,343 lbs for the manual 3.0L model. Of course, the 2.0L Supra is lighter than its brawnier sibling, saving about 164 lbs. Furthermore, the 3.0 Automatic adds a bit of poundage, tipping the scales at 3,382 lbs.

Still, the Supra’s lightness is enough to make it a featherweight compared to some of its competition. For instance, the Ford Mustang Mach 1 and BMW M2 are much heavier bruisers, at around 3,793 and 3,745 lbs, respectively. Lightness is vital in racing and performance. Consequently, the late Colin Chapman of Lotus commented that the key to making cars fast is to “simplify and add lightness.”

What is the fuel economy of the BMW M2?

The 2023 BMW M2 produces 453 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque from its eager twin-turbocharged 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine, a mill it shares with the M3, albeit in a different state of tune. Still, the mill is thirsty compared to its competitors, demanding 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

In comparison, the Mk5 Supra 3.0 manages a few extra miles per gallon of gasoline, to the tune of 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. As a result, the Mk5 Supra is more efficient, cheaper, and lighter than the muscular M car.
