When asked about luxury SUVs, many might tell you that BMW models are among the best. These SUVs are athletic, fun to drive, and offer excellent packages of features and space to meet your needs in many different categories. Surprisingly, BMW SUV sales are on the decline, which is a bit of a head-scratcher.

What’s the story with BMW SUV sales last quarter?

To learn more about the direction of the BMW SUV sales, we turn to GoodCarBadCar and analyze the sales figures. The chart below shows third-quarter sales for this year compared to last year.

As you can see from the chart, only one model shows significant sales increases, the BMW X1. The X4 and X7 both also show increased sales figures for the third quarter, but those numbers aren’t as high as you might expect them to be.

What’s causing the sales decline?

BMW, much like other automakers, is still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and has run into some production and supply shortages, leaving some dealership lots near empty. Without the right parts and features, customers must wait longer to receive a BMW SUV, which could lead to many shoppers heading to other automotive brands to find an available luxury SUV to drive.

Why is the BMW X1 experiencing an incredible sales spike?

While many automakers provide larger and more imposing vehicles to quench the thirst for more space, the BMW X1 is a popular choice with impressive sales figures compared to last year. Why are the BMW SUV sales of the X1 increasing so dramatically? Let’s take a look.

Although the X1 is the smallest of the BMW SUV models, it provides several qualities and features that make it one of the best options in its class. According to Cars.com, some of the reasons for the X1’s impressive sales results could be:

  • The X1 has a much-improved infotainment system
  • Several tech upgrades are included
  • The new X1 has more power than before
  • This BMW SUV is engaging to drive
  • The X1 offers better fuel mileage

How much better is the tech in the new X1?

The BMW X1 uses the latest iDrive 8 infotainment system, which is much easier to use than the previous rotary controller. The 10.7-inch touchscreen mounted in the center of the dash is useful and intuitive. Other tech upgrades include the addition of wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, giving drivers the desired connectivity in the cabin.

Does the new X1 offer a better drive than before?

The 2023 BMW X1 is more powerful than the outgoing model, producing 241 hp compared to the 228 hp found in the previous model. The improved engine mates to a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to offer smooth shifts and impressive acceleration.

The X1 is also well-balanced, making it an agile SUV with quick and controlled responses to driver inputs. This SUV delivers a good road feel to make it easy to carve up the corners. Toss in the 2-mpg increase in combined fuel mileage, and you have a winning formula.

Are BMW SUVS good to drive?

Although BMW SUV sales are mostly declining, these vehicles are still great to drive wherever you need to go. BMW traditionally produces athlete, agile, and tech-rich luxury vehicles to ensure drivers can enjoy their time behind the wheel.
