The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe provides an electrifying experience around town and in the woods with plenty of power and range to escape crowded city life for some peace and quiet. While it’s an expensive plug-in hybrid option, it has plenty of luxury comfort and standard features to be worth it.

This two-row SUV combines the best of both worlds, with a gas-powered engine and an electric motor o save fuel while providing instant torque and a peppy acceleration for an engaging experience behind the wheel.

Plus, the 4xe is loaded with advanced tech, such as a night vision camera, adjustable air suspension, optional passenger infotainment screen, and more to keep everyone comfortable and entertained.

We recommend starting with the Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4xe trim as it’s the most affordable option. It provides plenty of power with upgraded equipment for off-roading, like the Qudra-Trac 4WD system and a two-speed transfer case.

It also includes plenty of standard features for comfort and convenience, such as heated seats, heated steering, a power liftgate, automatic LED headlights, and eight-way power-adjustable front seats.

Those who need a bit more muscle for off-roading should consider the Trailhawk 4xe. It provides access to a limited-slip electronic rear differential, the Quadra-Lift air suspension with semi-active damping and front sway bar disconnect, and an integrated off-roading camera.

How does the Grand Cherokee 4xe drive?

Each 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe model is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and a 400-volt battery pack that combines to generate 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

The setup is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and steering-weel mounted paddle shifters to split the torque between all four wheels. According to MotorTrend, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.0 seconds.

It features instant acceleration with a smooth power delivery. However, you slow down pretty quickly in hybrid mode with Max Regen selected. You’ll need to keep your foot firmly on the accelerator to maintain your speed during steep climbs.

The 4xe features responsive handling and corners well. It feels confident and stable around curves without noticeable body roll. The steering is direct, and the 4xe doesn’t feel as large as it actually is, thanks to a tight turning radius.

You may notice that brakes are sensitive and can be grabby, but it doesn’t take long to used to. Simply turn the hybrid and max regen modes off to access a more standard performance. Each mode still recharges the batteries.

We noticed that the Sport mode tightened the suspension and adjusted the throttle response for a little more excitement. However, Auto mode provides a relaxing, casual experience for low-maintenance trips around town.

Yes, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is comfortable with an incredibly smooth ride. The suspension dampens rough sections of the road well. Plus, the interior is pretty quiet as engine and wind noise are kept at bay.

In fact, the hybrid engine is so quiet that sounds have been added in to alert pedestrians when you travel under 20 mph. But in the Sport Mode, you can hear an occasional engine roar that’s pretty enticing.

The seats are large and well-padded to provide tons of support during long drives. You can even opt for massaging chairs to relieve some of the stress from the day. If the seats feel stiff, use the numerous adjustment controls to find the perfect driving or riding position.

The seats in the second row are plush and supportive as well, but the backrest sits at a stiff upright angle. However, the rear seat reclines to become more comfortable. Passengers in the front and rear have plenty of leg space to stretch out. Only those taller than six feet might need more room in the back.

How much range does the 4xe have?

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe charging
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe | Jeep

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe can go about 470 miles with a full tank of gas and a 100 percent charge. This breaks down to an EPA-estimated 59 MPGe. Plus, the Grand Cherokee 4xe has an electric range of about 26 miles.

That’s enough charge to cover the average daily commute, and you don’t have to plug this SUV in. It regains tons of power from the regenerative braking system. Also, it can run with gas only or its electric charge. If you run out of electric range, it switches to gas and vice versa.

After driving about 100 miles, we found that we used 46 electric ones after starting with a zero percent charge. When we had no charge, we got about 19 mpg. The range adjusts based on your driving style and the modes you select.

For example, eSave uses gas while saving your electric charge for later.

The Hybrid Mode uses a blend of gasoline and electricity to provide the optimal performance.

Electric Mode pumps out nearly zero tailpipe emissions while running on your charge.

How do you charge the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe comes with a standard Level 1 charging cable. It can be plugged into a regular household outlet. It takes about 12 hours to fully recharge the batteries this way.

You can also use a Level 2 charger or a 240-volt outlet to replenish the battery in about two hours. These charges can be found around popular trailheads, grocery stores, and hotels. Plus, you can have the Mopar EV charger installed at your home.

The 4xe system isn’t compatible with DC fast charging stations.

Can the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe go off-roading?

Yes, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is an incredibly capable off-roader. The Quadra-Drive II is a full-time 4×4 system that’s always active and ready to transfer 100 percent torque to a rear wheel if needed.

The adaptive air suspension raises the ground clearance to 11.3-inches. It includes 4.3-inches of adjustment and semi-active dampening. When you select off-roading modes like Rock, it automatically rises.

Plus, the 4xe is water sealed to protect the battery. It can ford up to 24 inches of water. Reinforced housing protects the undercarriage from rocky terrain too. Other off-road modes include Snow, and Sand & Mud.

The digital gauge cluster and infotainment system display your pitch and roll on the trails. Also, the 360-degree camera system and forward-facing views make it easy to maneuver around tight obstacles.

We were impressed by how confident and stable the 4xe felt on gravel and dirt trails through the woods. It tackled steep inclines and climbed over light obstacles with ease. It didn’t slip or slide on slippery, muddy sections.

Does the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe have a nice interior?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee features an upscale interior crafted with high-quality, luxurious materials such as leather upholstery, wood grain, and faux suede inserts. You’re surrounded by soft-touch materials.

Everything you need is easily within reach, and the massive panoramic sunroof allows fresh air and natural light to fill the cabin. You can select two different shades of ambient lighting. Plus, heated, ventilated, and massaging seats are available.

The step-in height is a bit tall, but you can lower the suspension to make it more accessible. The doors open wide for easy access too. While the forward viability is great, large pillars can block side views, and the rear window is a little small. But the camera systems and parking sensors simplify parking and traversing through crowded areas.

How is the tech in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee features innovative and advanced tech that runs efficiently with the new Unconnect 5 software. The 10.3-inch infotainment system, digital gauge cluster, and head-up display feature vibrant, attractive graphics.

There are plenty of things to access, including a night vision camera that detects people and animals, the weather map that displays where it’s raining along your route, and how efficiently you’ve been using your fuel.

Getting lost in the serene 19-speaker McIntosh premium audio system is easy. With the optional passenger screen, your copilot can connect their wireless headphones to tune your music out.

There are plenty of USB-A and USB-C ports throughout the cabin, with an HMDI port for the passenger screen and a regular household outlet in the second row. Also, the wireless phone charging pad is in a convenient location.

The only drawback involves the use of tons of buttons. The dash is covered by tons of different things to click. It can take a minute to find the air conditioning controls or figure out how to turn the passenger screen on.

Does the Grand Cherokee 4xe have enough storage?

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe cargo space
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe | Jeep

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe slightly trails rivals in terms of cargo space. You can access up to 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 70.8 cubes total. The hatch opening is broad and can be raised or lowered based on your needs.

The hands-free tailgate is a nice perk, but the second-row seats must be manually folded to create a flat cargo floor. If you need extra room, the Cherokee 4xe can tow up to 6,000 lbs.

Storage space for personal gear is a little lacking, but the center console is pretty deep and wide. There are storage trays in the front for personal items, and the door pockets are a bit shallow.

How safe is the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe hasn’t been officially rated by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) yet. They haven’t evaluated the Grand Cherokee’s new body style.

But the Grand Cherokee 4xe comes with standard:

  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Adaptive cruise control

The safety features are responsive without being too sensitive. If you start to exit your lane, the steering wheel softly vibrates. Other vehicles emit loud beeps and firmly pull the steering wheel to the side, so this was a relaxing change.

MotorBiscuit gives the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe an expert rating of 8.5 out of 10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe off-roading
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe | Jeep

The editors at MotorBiscuit award the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe with an overall rating of 8.5 out of 10. While the 4xe provides plenty of standard value, it’s pretty expensive to get started with the hybrid powertrain.

Driving the 4xe can be athletic, engaging, and comfortable. However, driving in hybrid modes requires a bit more focus than sometimes desired. Overall, the fuel economy is extremely impressive, and this is one capable off-roading beast.

There is plenty of space for people and cargo. But space for personal items is limited. Also, while the advanced tech is out of this world, it can be a little time-consuming to find the menu you’re looking for.
