Finally, America’s best-selling PHEV has some competition from the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe was unmatched for a while, but now we can see if the new Jeep Grand Cherokee can take out the champ. 

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe vs. the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe 

Prepare for an epic battle of plug-in hybrid SUVs. We’ve never seen a Jeep battle like this one before. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe was flexing its blue tow hooks and hybrid power without much competition. 

Sure, there is the Toyota Highlander hybrid, but there isn’t a 4Runner yet. Also, where is the Ford Bronco Hybrid? It looks like the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe will remain as the only competitor for a while. So which Jeep is better? 

Does the Grand Cherokee or Wrangler 4xe have more power? 

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, two motors, and a 17.3-kWh battery under the rear seats. They combine to generate 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, making it the second most powerful Wrangler in history. The Rubicon 392 has a little more muscle with 470 hp. 

With the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, you get the same powertrain. This means that you get the same 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The gas-powered powertrains include the 3.6-liter V6 and 5.6-liter Hemi V8 powertrains from the previous generation. The V8 provides 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. 

Both of these Jeep 4xe models have an EPA-estimated electric range of 25 miles. So, you can travel for up to 25 miles before the gas engine kicks in. But the Wrangler 4xe has an estimated range of 49 MPGe while the Grand Cherokee 4xe has a range of 57 MPGe. Perhaps the Grand Cherokee is lighter, allowing it to have an increased range. 

The Wrangler 4xe can tow up to 3,500 lbs. This is the same amount as gas-powered Wrangle models. The Grand Cherokee 4xe can tow up to 6,000 lbs, but gas-powered models can tow up to 7,200 lbs. 

Both models feature an off-roading trim. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon is better equipped for off-roading than the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk. But the Trailhawk still has 11.3-inches of ground clearance, an electronically locking limited-slip differential, a disconnecting sway bar, and adjustable air suspension. 

Does the Grand Cherokee 4xe or Wrangler have better features? 

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe could have a more comfortable ride than the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. But we will have to wait until the new Grand Cherokee hits the streets to know for sure. 

Both SUVs have an 8.4-inch infotainment system that can be upgraded to a larger size. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. You can opt for a digital gauge cluster and a 10.0-inch head-up display in the Cherokee. 

The Wrangler 4xe begins at about $51,225. Pricing for the Grand Cherokee 4xe hasn’t been revealed. However, it could fetch a similar price. It’s available in the Limited trim, but the Wrangler 4xe comes in the Sahara or Rubicon trim, so there’s a chance that it could be cheaper.
