In 2022, no one can blame you for buying a used pickup truck like a Ford Ranger. Today’s trucks have become pretty expensive, especially if you want one that comes well-equipped. Thankfully, on the used market, you can find a reliable mid-size truck without breaking the bank. But that does come with some risks. Because even a popular pickup like the Ranger has some models that you should avoid.

Which Ford Ranger model should you avoid?

Generally speaking, the Ford Ranger has been a reliable mid-size truck, but in 1999 this pickup had some serious problems. Although most issues are seen with high-mileage variants, if you are buying a truck that is over 20 years old, it’s likely going to have a lot of miles on the clock.

According to CarComplaints, the 1999 Ford Ranger is plagued with issues. This pickup has one of the worst reputations in terms of Ford vehicles, so if you are shopping used, you probably want to avoid it. Problems include issues with the temperature gauge as well as problems with the transmission. Overall, there are over 1,000 complaints for this mid-size truck.

Is the Ranger a reliable truck?

The Ranger has long been Ford’s mid-size truck and generally speaking, it is reliable. Especially models from the current generation. Ultimately, if you are shopping for a used pickup, it is best to check things like service records and do your research for the specific year you are purchasing.

Common problems throughout the years seem to be the engine, transmission, and electrical issues. But, if you can find a model that has been well taken care of, the Ranger should certainly be on your radar for mid-size trucks.

Which used Ford Ranger is best?

If buying a current-gen Ranger is out of reach, the 2011 Ford Ranger is a good alternative. This model came standard with a four-cylinder engine, which makes about 150 horsepower. It is also a pickup that came standard with a manual transmission. But, if you want more power from your mid-size truck, Ford has the answer.

The 2011 Ranger offers a 4.0-liter V6 engine that makes 207 hp. Additionally, you could get it with four-wheel drive. And that will give you a legitimately capable truck. Another perk of this generation of Ranger is its design and simplicity. It just looks like a classic American pickup. Lacking all of the complexity of today’s Ford Ranger.

Is buying a used pickup truck worth it?

When you’re not set on having all of the latest automotive features, buying a used truck can be a good move. It’s just important to keep in mind that some models might be more reliable than others.

The Ranger has long been a popular small pickup. Because of that, there are plenty of well-maintained options out there. Remember that you should probably avoid the 1999 model if you want a reliable truck. The cons outweigh the pros, so it’s best to skip it.
