Is Michael Jordan more of a car guy than we thought? Are the gearheads at his NASCAR 23XI Racing team rubbing off on him? Jordan, who’s now 60, has plunked down a staggering $3.5 million on a new Hennessey Venom F5 Roadster that can top 300 miles per hour. Jordan is, as always, in rare air as Hennessey will only make 30 F5 Roadsters for the entire world.

What is a Hennessey Venom F5?

Hennessey founder and CEO John Hennessey plastered his Instagram this week with images of him and Jordan with the new car. If I sold MJ a car, I’d probably do the same. The difference is this is a weird, special, fast, hand-built exotic car that Hennessey says is tested to go more than 300 mph. Every bit of the car that can be is made of carbon fiber.

The two-seat Hennessey roadster comes with the brand’s Fury V8. The Fury is a 6.6-liter V8 with two turbochargers that makes 1,817 horsepower. The car weights just 3,100 pounds, too, so you can expect it amazing performance. It already holds several records, and more are sure to come as Hennesey keeps tuning the car. All Hennessey cars are made in Texas by Hennessey Special Vehicles.

The Roadster is the newest version of the F5. It has several features the regular car, if you can call a $3 million car regular, doesn’t have. The F5 Roadster is, at its name suggests, a convertible. It has a removable carbon fiber roof panel to let the sun and wind in. The Roadster also has a new tempered glass window over the engine bay, so you can look in and see the hypercar’s motor. Roadsters also get different silver wheels to the coupe’s black rims.

Hennessey also makes a track-focused version called the Revolution with big wings and more downforce. The regular F5 cars have a noticeable lack of wings, that’s because fast cars don’t want any drag as they aim for astronomical top speeds. But, for going fast around a track, downforce is key and the Revolution has a big rear wing and several aerodynamic aids on the front to help suck it to the tarmac.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if Michael Jordan owns a NASCAR team, he’s into fast cars. They don’t get much faster.

This year the team has superstars Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick driving. Wallace is ranked 15th in the points and is on track to make the NASCAR playoffs. He came in second at last weekend’s exciting All Star Race. Reddick has one win this season and is ranked 10th. He, too, is likely headed to the season-ending playoff championship.
