This Used Truck With the Biggest Price Hike Doesn’t Make Sense
Take a guess at which used truck is getting more expensive! We’re willing to bet that the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Maverick, or Toyota Tundra came to mind, but those are all incorrect answers. The used truck that’s getting more expensive is actually an underdog.
Used Nissan Frontier models are getting more expensive
Drum roll, please, because the used Nissan Frontier could become the most expensive used truck. Yep, the truck is out of the bag, and it’s a little surprising. On tons of different lists that rank the best mid-size trucks, the Frontier is often at the bottom of the list.
However, iSeeCars has put in the work to determine which used vehicles have dropped the most in price. It analyzed over 1.8 million vehicles used vehicles between one to five years old from June 2022 to June 2023.
The used truck with the biggest price drop is the Honda Ridgeline. The average price for a used Ridgeline in June 2023 was $34,617, a 4.1% or $1,469 decrease in price compared to June 2022.
The average price for a used Frontier in June 2023 was $30,097, which is up by 4.3% or $1,248 compared to June.
This price increase could be related to supply and demand. Fewer Frontier models have been sold since the start of the pandemic. In the first quarter of 2023, the Frontier moved 16,926 models.
But during the same period last year, it sold 22,405 models, so it has a 24.5% decrease year over year. With less inventory available prices could go up, but is the demand growing?
Is a used Frontier worth buying?
Used Nissan Frontier trucks are worth buying because they are a bit more modern compared to the competition. The Frontier was redesigned in 2022, beating the competition to market.
The Toyota Tacoma has been pretty much the same since 2016, and the new model just debuted in 2024. The new Ford Ranger recently dropped as well. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon were remodeled for 2023.
So, the used Frontier may feel a bit newer compared to other used trucks that haven’t been updated for years. While the Frontier is often referred to as an old truck with new clothes, it does have more modern tech than used rivals.
Also, the Frontier has a stout standard engine that’s difficult to resist. The 3.8-liter V6 engine pumps out 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. That’s more standard power than the 2023 Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, and Ford Ranger have to offer.
How reliable is the Frontier?
The 2023 Nissan Frontier has an above-average reliability score. It earned an 83 out of 100 from J.D.Power. Scores between 81 to 90 are above average, while scores between 91 and 100 are best.
These rankings are based on issues reported by actual owners with previous model years. The average Frontier is expected to last between 200,000 to 250,000 miles. So it’s not the most long-lasting truck, but it’s reliable and has been improving in recent history.
While most used trucks are coming down in price, the used Nissan Frontier is going up. It feels like it’s swimming against the stream, but sales are still down year over year. Maybe people want to save with a used truck that feels newer than the rest.
