The Expedition is the Ford brand’s biggest SUV and its largest family-hauler. Boasting spaciousness and power, the three-row Ford Expedition is one of the most popular large SUVs in the segment. The newest 2020 Ford Expedition is far more than just large and potent, however, as it may just be the safest large SUV you can buy. From ensuring every member of your family can ride with ease, to keeping them safe on the journey, the 2020 Ford Expedition has you covered.

The 2020 Ford Expedition might be the safest large SUV you can buy

The experts at U.S. News compiled a list of the year’s safest large SUVs and with only six SUVs in the segment to choose from, competition for the top is fierce. While large SUVs from brands typically known for their safety fell to the bottom of the list, like the Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada, the newest Ford Expedition appears to be stealing the show.

Based on crash testing, safety features, and more, U.S. News ranks the Ford Expedition as the safest large SUV in 2020. In fact, no other large SUV in 2020 can match the safety and performance found in the new Ford Expedition.

Calling the 2020 Expedition “the entire package,” U.S. News experts give it an overall score of 8.4/10 with its safety and overall value helping it rank highest in the segment. The Expedition wins the No. 1 position in both U.S. News’ “Large SUVs” and “SUVs with 3 Rows” lists.

With scores and ratings so high, it comes as no surprise that the Ford Expedition is also U.S. News’ “2020 Best Large SUV for Families” award winner. Even with a base price that is comparably high for the segment, the Expedition has plenty of value to provide buyers.

How the 2020 Expedition performs in safety testing

In safety testing performed by the NHTSA, the 2020 Ford Expedition outperformed many other SUVs, regardless of segment and size. It receives a perfect overall safety rating of five (out of five) stars, earning five stars in both side and frontal crash testing.

The four-wheel-drive Expedition fared slightly better than rear-wheel-drive variants in rollover testing, earning four stars over the RWD’s three stars. The risk of a rollover is estimated at 20.80 percent for RWD Expeditions and 19.30 percent for 4WD variants. No other SUV in the segment has received a five-out-of-five overall rating so far this year.

Behind the safety of the 2020 Ford Expedition: standard features and available options

According to Ford, all new 2020 Expedition models now come standard with its Co-Pilot360 suite of safety features. Ford Co-Pilot360 includes an array of standard technology, such as automatic high-beams, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, a reverse sensing system with rear-view camera, roll-stability/electronic/traction control, hill-start assist, auto stop-start, and blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert.

Ford’s MyKey system also comes standard on all Expedition SUVs, which includes a keyless entry system, seat-belt reminders, and the ability to set limits for secondary drivers. All Expeditions are also equipped with an SOS post-crash alert through its SYNC 3 system.

Trailer-tow monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping alert and assist, ProTrailer backup assist, and voice-activated navigation are all available options for base Expeditions. The highest-level trims, such as the Expedition Platinum, come standard all of those options and more.

In addition to gaining features only available as options on base trims, higher-trim Expeditions also get standard rain-sensing wipers, a forward-sensing system, enhanced active park assist, and a 360-degree camera. Although the additional features found on higher trims are impressive, standard features even on base Ford Expedition models offer incredible safety value to owners.
