Why are we plagued with irresistible racing truck concepts? The Toyota Tacoma GR Sport is the latest example of a sleek, lowered truck meant to dominate the track. But what are the chances for the 2025 Toyota Tacoma GR Sport to become a new trim level?

What is the Toyota Tacoma GR Sport?

The Toyota Tacoma GR Sport is a racing-oriented truck that is being built by the Gazoo racing team. It has modern-day advancements to be one beefy performance truck.

Its racing upgrades go beyond what the Toyota Tacoma X-Runner has to offer. This tracks as rumors suggest that the X-Runner won’t make it to production.

Reportedly, the Tacoma GR Sport is powered by a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 engine with 421 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, so that seems a little fishy.

The new Tacoma has a standard turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with up to 278 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid i-FORCE Max powertrain pairs the same engine with 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.

It would make more sense to tune the standard engine for racing or to use the hybrid setup for instant torque. However, the hybrid setup could make it a little heavy for racing.

Another rumor suggests that the Tacoma GR Sport could be manual only, but yeah right! Americans love their automatic transmissions.

If the Tacoma GR Sport is similar to the Hilux GR Sport, then it will have an improved suspension for racing with a suspension lift, wider track, stiffer springs, monotube dampers, and bigger disc brakes.

It will probably be lowered with wider fender flairs, a more aerodynamic hood, and a spoiler in the rear. Rumors suggest that it will ride on 17-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires.

However, the Hilux GR Sport is more oriented for jumping sand dunes and high-speed off-roading. The Tacoma GR Sport will probably be built for the pavement, as it already has plenty of off-road trims available.

Typically, the Hilux received upgrades before its American twin. There’s a chance that the Toyota Tacoma GR Sport could follow in its tracks to compete against the Ford Ranger Raptor.

However, it could also be built for street racing. Stay tuned for updates.
