It’s no secret that the latest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) safety tests have stumped many sedans and hatchbacks, save for a select few. However, Toyota’s cars came to play in the updated test criteria, snagging several of the agency’s Top Safety Pick+ ratings. Check out how the Toyota Corolla Cross, Prius, and Prius Prime snagged top ratings in 2023 IIHS safety evaluations.

Where does Toyota rank in safety?

Regarding safety, Toyota cars earned two of the three Top Safety Pick+ ratings in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s small cars category. Moreover, the 2023 Camry is one of only three midsize Top Safety Pick+ winners. As a result, the Japanese marque’s 2023 lineup has some safe bets to boast.

Moreover, the safety agency awarded some of the brand’s popular small cars and the Toyota Corolla Cross with Top Safety Pick+ and Top Safety Pick ratings, respectively. It isn’t just the IIHS, either; some of these Toyota cars also snagged top accolades from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross received a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, although it missed the “+” rating. As you might have guessed, the agency’s updated side crashworthiness test is the culprit.

According to the latest tests, the Corolla Cross earned a “Poor” rating in the side test pelvic injury simulation metric. While that might be sobering for some, the Toyota Corolla Cross’ performance in every other metric earned it a spot among the 16 popular small SUVs with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ ratings.

Is the Toyota Prius a safe car?

The Toyota Prius earned a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, the agency’s highest award. It’s no simple feat, either; vehicles have to earn a “Good” rating in every crashworthiness category to receive the “+” rating. Better yet, the Prius made a near-perfect scorecard, save for an “Acceptable” rating in the headlights category.

Moreover, the 2023 Toyota Prius has the brand’s Safety Sense 3.0 suite of active safety features. Specifically, the Toyota model’s safety suite packs active crash avoidance tech like front-collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, and an emergency stop function. However, unlike the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross, the NHTSA hasn’t evaluated the Prius.

Is the Toyota Prius Prime a safe car?

The Toyota Prius Prime earned a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, making it one of only three small cars to do so this year. Like the standard Prius, the Prime received a near-perfect score sheet, save for an “Acceptable” headlight rating.
