However, if you want one of the cheapest full-size cars to own and want to save money at the pumps, you’ve only got one real option: the Toyota Avalon Hybrid. According to Kelley Blue Book (KBB), the 2021 Toyota Avalon Hybrid has a cheaper cost to own than the Chrysler 300 and the Volkswagen Arteon. 

How much should I pay for a 2021 Toyota Avalon?

The 2021 Toyota Avalon has a starting price of $37,850. However, according to TrueCar, you’ll have to spend an additional $1,025 for the Hybrid XLE, putting the starting price at $38,875. That money buys you a hybrid 2.5L inline four-cylinder engine capable of some significant fuel savings.

How much does the 2021 Toyota Avalon Hybrid cost to own?

The 2021 Toyota Avalon has the lowest cost to own in the full-size car category. According to KBB, the Avalon Hybrid has a five-year cost to own of $47,477. Also, the Avalon Hybrid has nearly half the five-year fuel costs of a comparable Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger SXT. It’s also much cheaper to insure, with an average five-year rate of $4,980. 

However, it is not all good news and fuel savings for the Toyota Avalon Hybrid. Instead, the Avalon Hybrid depreciates an average of $23,463, nearly $3,000 more than the Chrysler. The Toyota sedan also has the highest maintenance costs on KBB’s list of the cheapest full-size cars. 

How many mpg does the 2021 Toyota Avalon get?

As you might expect of a hybrid, the Toyota Sedan gets commendable fuel economy. Specifically, the 2021 Toyota Avalon Hybrid gets 43 mpg in the city and 44 mpg at highway speeds. That puts it well ahead of a Volkswagen Arteon, which only manages 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.

The benefits of that fuel efficiency are apparent over time. According to KBB, running the Avalon Hybrid will cost an average of $5,582 over five years. That’s nearly $4,000 less than the Volkswagen Arteon. 

Is the Avalon expensive to insure?

The Toyota Avalon Hybrid is relatively inexpensive to insure compared to some of its competitors. The Toyota hybrid sedan costs an average of $4,980 to insure for five years, around $500 cheaper than a Pentastar V6-powered Dodge Charger SXT. However, the Volkswagen Arteon is more affordable to insure by nearly $200 over the same period.

Should you buy a Chrysler 300 or Volkswagen Arteon instead?

If you want a full-size car with the cheapest cost to own, the Toyota Avalon Hybrid is a great choice. Also, with the highest fuel efficiency on KBB’s list of full-size picks, the savings could continue over time.
