The Ford Raptor is one of the highest performance pickup trucks in the U.S., and a new spin on it has entered the market. Hennessey Performance, a car-tuning company, unveiled its six-wheeled Velociraptor and it costs almost $350,000. Here’s everything you need to know about this monster of a truck.

The Ford Raptor concept has six wheels

Unlike Hennessey’s other tunings, such as the Ranger Velociraptor, this 6×6 Velociraptor takes a 2017 Raptor and heavily modifies the rear-portion of the truck.

Hennessey stretched the bed of the Raptor to accommodate the extra pair of wheels, according to Motor1. On top of that, Hennessey also revamped the suspension so that it can accommodate the extra weight.

This 6×6 Velociraptor comes with 37-inch tires that are ideal for off-roading. The size of these tires and the fact that there are six of them will provide the 6×6 Velociraptor with some of the best off-roading capabilities on the market, according to Hennessey.

Furthermore, the novelty of seeing a six-wheeled truck on the roads also drives up the price of this 6×6 Velociraptor. According to Road and Track, Hennessey will only be building 50 of these trucks. Thus, not only will these trucks be unique, but also be very rare too.

Additional upgrades

To further justify the high price tag, Hennessey upgraded many other areas of the Ford Raptor. The most powerful trim of the truck comes with a 6.2-liter V8 that generates over 400-hp. Hennessey on the other hand, put a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 600-hp, according to Motor1.

This upgraded engine allows the 6×6 Velociraptor to tow over 8,000 lb, according to Luxury Auto Collection. That’s comparable to the heaviest duty version of the Raptor.

This extra weight and the more powerful engine does affect its fuel economy, though. According to Luxury Auto Collection, the 6×6 Velociraptor gets about 15 MPG in the city and 18 MPG on highways. That’s slightly worse than some models of the Raptor, but not by much.

On top of that, Hennessey added a roll bar, modified the front and rear bumpers, as well as upgraded the factory computer on the Raptor to create the 6×6 Velociraptor. Hennessey also offers other upgrades, such as an armoring system and upgrades to the Velociraptor’s brakes.

Is this concept truck worth it?

The Ford Raptor is already a great all-around truck, so the toughest competition for the 6×6 Velociraptor isn’t other 6x6s, but the Raptor itself. A regular brand-new Raptor can start at about $50,000 and this 6×6 Velociraptor can cost over seven times that. In terms of features, the 6×6 Velociraptor doesn’t offer anything too different from the regular Raptor.

That’s because Hennessey is a tuning company, so its cars aren’t too different from the cars that it’s modifying from. According to Luxury Auto Collection, the 6×6 Velociraptor has a lot of optional features but most of them are also found in the regular Raptor.

The truck bed of the 6×6 Velociraptor is larger than the Raptor’s but the Raptor’s truck bed is already big enough for most situations. Furthermore, the extra set of wheels and the upgraded suspension makes the 6×6 Velociraptor great for off-roading, but the regular Raptor is already great for that as well. On top of that, there likely aren’t many situations where the 6×6 Velociraptor would outperform the original when it comes to the outdoors.

And, if someone buys the 6×6 Velociraptor for off-roading purposes, it begs the question of how often they will want to drive a $350,000 truck around in the forest or desert. For most people it seems, if you just want a solid pickup truck, the Raptor is good enough. But of course, there’s the novelty factor of the 6×6 Velociraptor, and it’s a truck that’s guaranteed to turn heads.
