SUVs may be some of the most popular vehicles on the market right now, but station wagons offer similar benefits in a smaller, sleeker package. One excellent station wagon that can handle off-roading surprisingly well despite its luxury status is the Audi A4 Allroad, according to MotorTrend. Let’s take a look at what it is that sets the A4 Allroad apart.

What you can expect from the Audi A4 Allroad

The Audi A4 Allroad is the slightly smaller version of the A6 Allroad, with 24.2 cubic feet of cargo space. It features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 261 hp, and it gets 24 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway. The A4 Allroad has a base price of just $45,595, making it one of the more affordable options on MotorTrend’s list of station wagons available in 2021.

This vehicle features a 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. Other features include heated front seats, remote keyless entry, and lane departure warning.

The A4 Allroad is just one option among MotorTrend’s selection of available station wagons. Several other Audis, including the RS6 Avant and A6 Allroad, are listed alongside the A4. Other notable 2021 station wagons are the Volvo V90 and the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon, both of which are pricier than the A4 Allroad.

Its impressive off-roading capabilities

The Audi A4 Allroad features extra ground clearance that sets it up for success if you plan to do a little off-roading. However, what truly gives the A4 Allroad an edge is its Quattro all-wheel drive, which comes standard. Although the A4 Allroad may not have the look of a rugged off-road vehicle, it can hold its own on rougher terrain than you might expect.

The A4 Allroad’s engine also gives it a slight advantage. It has a similar powertrain as the previous model year, but the automaker added a 12-volt hybrid system that raises its horsepower by 13. Both MotorTrend and Car and Driver describe the engine as “peppy,” making the A4 Allroad fun to drive both on and off the road.

It is worth noting that this station wagon can’t quite compare to vehicles such as Jeeps, which are specifically designed to handle intense off-road adventures. However, its higher clearance, powerful engine, and Quattro all-wheel drive give the A4 Allroad a definite edge on rough dirt roads or other moderate off-road areas. This blend of off-road capability and luxury is an exciting combination that certainly sets the A4 Allroad apart.

The pros and cons of the Audi A4 Allroad

Car and Driver reports that the Audi A4 Allroad “drives like a dream.” It handles well, easily taking tight corners. In fact, test drivers note that it may be the ideal choice for someone who wants a vehicle that drives like a car while offering advantages similar to an SUV.

Another benefit of the A4 Allroad is its comfortable cabin. It has a significant amount of rear legroom, and its interior has all the standard features you’d expect from a luxury vehicle: a large sunroof, leather upholstery, and three-zone automatic climate control.

Any downsides the A4 Allroad may have are fairly minor. It isn’t rated for towing, meaning that it may not be the ideal choice for drivers who want to bring a camper along for their off-roading trips. Car and Driver also notes that the A4 Allroad has a surprisingly small amount of cargo space, fitting only six carry-on bags behind the rear seat.

While it may not be the best option for people who need plenty of room, the Audi A4 Allroad is otherwise excellent. Its combination of affordability, luxury, and off-road capabilities make this an ideal choice for anyone who wants to go adventuring in style.
