Toyota SUVs and trucks have a long history of reliability, especially when it comes to the Highlander and Sequoia sport utility vehicles. Is finding a used Toyota Highlander the move, or should you hunt down a used Toyota Sequoia? Check out some stats below that might help lead you in one way or another, depending on how much room you need and how much you want to spend.

How long will a used Toyota Highlander last?

The experts at iSeeCars have been looking at some of the longest-lasting vehicles, and the Highlander has a 17.5% chance of hitting 250,000 miles. That is 1.2x higher than the overall SUV average, around 15%. The Highlander has a long history of reliability and a fairly reasonable cost.

A new Toyota Highlander is just over $44,000, but finding a three-year-old option has an average cost of $41,762. The average cost for 2017 through 2022 models is $36,739, making it slightly more affordable. Toyota’s midsize SUV might cost more, but that is also because the Highlander holds its value so well.

The used Toyota Highlander was ninth on the list of most reliable three-row SUVs, far behind the Sequoia. Around 1.5% of all Highlanders on the road have 200,000 miles on the odometer, and it earned a score of 8.8 for reliability.

How many miles will a Toyota Sequoia last?

On that same iSeeCars study, the Toyota Sequoia has a 47.1% chance of lasting 250,000 miles. That landed it in fourth place overall and behind two other Toyota models. The Toyota Land Cruiser has a 47.9% chance of hitting that high mileage, and the full-size Tundra truck had the same chance.

Finding a used Sequoia might be harder than a used Toyota Highlander, simply because the automaker makes fewer options. Drivers tend to hold onto the full-size Sequoia longer as well since it has a reputation for being so dependable. A new Sequoia could run you $64,466 on average, but a three-year-old option is $64,510. The 2017 through 2022 years have an average cost of $56,565, quite a bit more than the Highlander.

A used Toyota Sequoia is the second most reliable vehicle in the SUV with three-rows category and earned a reliability score of 9.4. Around 11.2% of Sequoias on the market have 200,000 miles or more.

It might be easier to find a Highlander, but the Sequoia is a good buy

The Highlander has three rows and room for seven or eight passengers, but it is considerably smaller than the Sequoia. That makes driving and parking a bit easier, but it won’t have nearly as much space as the Sequoia. Toyota’s full-size SUV also has room for seven or eight passengers but delivers more legroom and cargo space.

If the budget allows for a used Toyota Sequoia and you need the space, it is a good option that should last hundreds of thousands of miles. A used Toyota Highlander might be easier and cheaper to find, not to mention it still has the potential to last a long time. Check out some of the best used Toyota Highlander years to look for, and the same for the best Sequoia years if you can’t decide.
