Mazda has many reliable SUVs in its lineup for 2023, including all of the options below that won at least one safety award. The safest Mazda SUVs, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, are below, which are actually all of the sport utility vehicles the brand currently offers. Whatever Mazda is doing seems to be working.

The CX-30 is one of the safest Mazda SUVs, according to the IIHS

When the IIHS listed the safest Mazdas from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety winners, the automaker had three options in the category. First up is the 2023 Mazda CX-30 in the compact SUV category. Kelley Blue Book says it comes with plenty of standard safety features like forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the CX-30 its Top Safety Pick award for 2023.

The compact SUV category is pretty competitive, so it makes sense the CX-30 would come pretty well-equipped. While it was more expensive than some of the other options in the segment, the interior is stylish and well-finished. Three small Mazda SUVs earned Top Safety Pick awards out of seven vehicles overall.

Both the CX-5 and CX-50 landed on the list of safest Mazda SUVs

In its second generation now, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is still sporty and fun to drive. The 2023 version has a quieter cabin and upgraded interior, only adding to the allure. In addition to the driver assistance features mentioned previously, the CX-5 also gets blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warnings. It earned the Top Safety Pick award and a high score on the front crash avoidance tests.

Drivers like the 2023 Mazda CX-50 for how it handles and for its nice interior. On top of that, the CX-50 has comfortable seats and plenty of standard safety features. Mazda included forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and blind-spot warning as standard driver assistance features. The CX-50 also received systems like automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. According to the IIHS, this Mazda SUV also landed on the list of the safest small SUVs.

For a safe midsize SUV, the CX-9 has three rows

According to the IIHS, one of the safest midsize Mazda SUVs is the CX-9. Only two SUVs qualified for this award in 2023, down quite a bit from the year before. The CX-9 has three rows and plenty of space for the whole family. It also offers a comfortable ride and a quiet cabin.

Standard driver assistance features include forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and blind-spot warning. In addition, rear cross-traffic warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist are also standard. All of these systems helped the 2023 Mazda CX-9 earn the Top Safety Pick award. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also gave the 2023 CX-9 a five-star overall safety rating.

Since this is all of the SUVs in Mazda’s lineup for this year, that’s quite the accomplishment. The CX-90 is coming soon, and some more alternative powertrain options should be available later this year. However, Mazda has four safe SUVs to choose from for now, with approval from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
