After reviewing the 2016 Toyota RAV4 so many years ago, Kelley Blue Book still thinks it is one of the best used SUVs money can buy. Toyota’s RAV4 SUV has a history of being a reliable and long-lasting vehicle. If you can find one with the optional TSS-P safety, drivers get pre-collision braking, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. In 2017, Toyota included these safety features as standard fare, but most options exceeded the budget.

Honda’s CR-V is a reliable used SUV for under $20,000

People have come to rely on the 2017 Honda CR-V, and experts seem to agree with the owners. Kelley Blue Book calls it “an icon of the segment,” but it offers more. If you can find a version with the Honda Sensing safety suite, it provides even more safety features. These include lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. All trim levels except the base model received this as standard equipment and pre-collision braking and pedestrian detection.

The Mazda CX-5 is fun to drive and has room for five

Reliable used SUVs under $20,000 still leave room in the budget for the 2018 Mazda CX-5. Some drivers report the cargo area is smaller than rivals, but people also report that the CX-5 is fun to drive. Kelley Blue Book says that as far as used SUVs go, they have the “most spirited personality.” Plus, the 2016 CX-5 is reliable and reasonably priced.

Reliable used SUVs for under $20,000 include the Subaru Forester

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the 2018 Subaru Forester is a reliable used SUV. Equipped with all-wheel drive as standard fare and 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the Forester is a good buy. Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist system offers pre-collision braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. If you can find a 2018 option with these added features, that will be the safest option.

The Toyota Venza SUV has a lot to offer buyers

While the 2015 Toyota Venza is one of the older options, it still has plenty to offer buyers who want a reliable used SUV under $20,000. Thanks to its wagon-like shape, the Venza has 70.1 cubic feet of cargo space for whatever you might need to bring along. Even in 2015, the Toyota Venza had enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. It also has seven airbags to keep everyone safe.

The best choices for reliable used SUVs under $20,000 have plenty of safety features and a reasonable price. While it seems like an overwhelming amount of options are out there, these five should give you a place to start.
