Backing up can be difficult if your vehicle is large, or if you’re trying to pull out of a cramped parking spot. Backup cameras help the driver see exactly how far away they are from bumping into another vehicle and prevent accidents. The NHTSA is even trying to make it a requirement for all cars to have a backup camera installed.

Many auto companies offer a backup camera as an add-on option. In fact, backup sensors are standard on some cars. If you want to skip the installation fees, there are plenty of aftermarket backup cameras that you can buy for yourself. Here are some of the best ones for this year, according to PopularMechanics.

Esky EC170-06

For those on the budget, the Esky backup camera has the highest appeal with a low price tag of $17. The camera is easy to install and very versatile due to its small size. You can install it on virtually any vehicle.

In addition to helping you back out, the camera can help you see blind spots while you’re trying to shift between lanes since its wide-angle lens can rotate up to 170 degrees.

The camera can be mounted on any exterior surface, such as the back window or under your license plate. It’s waterproof and dustproof so that it won’t be damaged during extreme weather conditions. Not to mention, it also has a night vision mode for dimly lit areas.

The only downside to this camera is that you will have to purchase a video monitor separately, but these are available at an equally affordable price. The video feed is shown in 628 X 586 pixels with a resolution of 420p. The required cables for connecting to the monitor are included when you buy the camera itself.

Rear View Safety RVS-091407

Rear View Safety is known for making reliable backup cameras and other driver safety devices. The 091407 model can be easily installed onto your rear-view mirror. It has a viewing angle of 130 degrees and comes with 9 infrared LED lights to help you see better at night. Like the Esky, this camera is also completely dustproof and waterproof, as well as shock-resistant.

The 091407’s camera transmits a wireless feed to the monitor, which can be connected and charged through one of your car’s power ports. It has a wide wireless connectivity range of 70 feet.

The screen delivers high-definition quality on a color 4.3-inch screen. It is a little more expensive than some modestly priced backup cameras. However, it comes from one of the most trusted brands in rearview safety technology. If you have any problems, the company also offers a 1-year warranty on all of its products.

Rear View Safety RVS-091406

This is another model from the RVS line, which was voted as the best backup camera for overall use in 2019. Like its later model, this camera has a wide-angle viewing lens of up to 130 degrees. It comes with 9 infrared lights that will allow you to see up to 30 feet in total darkness. It has a wireless transmission of up to 70 feet and has an IP68 rating for protection against dust and water damage.

The main difference that sets it apart from the 091407 is that the monitor can be installed directly onto your windshield. The suction cup mount is made of high-grade materials and won’t fall off while you’re driving.

The monitor is 4.3 inches with a resolution of 1140 x 234. The only downside to this camera is its high price tag, but you can’t beat the peace of mind you get from knowing you purchased a reliable product.
