If you’re considering buying an electric vehicle for the first time, Tesla is probably on the list of options. The name has become synonymous with EVs, and sales show it. As one of the most profitable automakers globally, Tesla is enjoying its time at the top. When will new electric vehicles take over in sales from the electric titan? For now, no EV comes close to outselling these three Tesla models.

3 Tesla models are still outselling every other EV

No EV comes close to outselling these three Tesla models, even in 2022. According to Electrek, in the US, Tesla continues to trounce the competition in sales, with three models far ahead. Despite a 29% increase in EV deliveries compared to last year and an uptick in new electric models, Tesla remains on top. Although throughout 2022 and 2023, we expect to see many new models join the market. When will one of them finally steal the show from Elon Musk’s automotive brand?

In first place is the Tesla Model Y, which is an electric crossover. A crossover is at the top of the sales leaderboards, to no one’s surprise. Crossovers have become increasingly popular in the US, often the best-selling models along with pickup trucks. Next is the Tesla Model 3, the most affordable model by far. Other models from the automaker cost as much as six figures, but the Model 3 is the sole affordable sedan option.

Finally, in third place is the Tesla Model S. It’s very popular and is more of a performance, upscale version of the Model 3 sedan. However, it’s far more expensive than its cost-effective sibling, so we’re not surprised it fell behind in sales. One model missing from the top three is the Model X, the brand’s overpriced SUV.

The best-selling Teslas are far ahead of even the third-place model. There’s roughly a 38,000-unit difference in sales between the second-place Model 3 and the Model S. It only worsens from there. Behind the Tesla Model S, which sold 9,250 units, is the Ford Mustang Mach-E. However, the Mach-E only sold 6,957 units, which isn’t particularly close. Even further from the top-selling EV, the Model Y has sold 52,051 units so far.

Considering the production issues Ford has experienced, the numbers may be a bit skewed. Tesla has overcome supply chain and chip shortage issues far better than other automakers. Additionally, Ford’s most popular models are nearly impossible to find, like the Mustang Mach-E. We’re sure many people would’ve bought one had it been available.

No EV can outsell three Tesla models

In conclusion, no EV comes close to outselling these three Tesla models. The Model Y, Model 3, and Model S are the best-selling electric vehicles in the U.S. so far in 2022. However, a significant reason why is other automaker’s lack of production. They can’t sell what doesn’t exist, but Tesla hasn’t struggled as much with the chip shortage. We expect popular new EVs to take over in sales figures sooner than later.
