The Mustang Mach-E could be the best electric SUV on the market. The selection of new electric SUVs is growing exponentially. This year, Hyundai, Kia, Audi, BMW and many others launched new EV SUVs that are competing well with their gasoline-powered counterparts. But on almost every list we can find, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is at the top. Could it be the best electric SUV you can buy today?

What is the best electric SUV on the market?

Consumer Reports recommends the Mach-E, and it’s the top-rated EV SUV in the segment. Kelley Blue Book picked the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E as the best electric SUV buy one-tenth of a point. It scored a 4.6 on KBB’s list, while the Kia EV6 is No. 2 at a 4.5. It also won AAA’s Best Overall Car award for 2022. The Mach-E also won Car and Driver’s first EV of the Year Award, making it the best electric SUV the magazine tested.

At J.D. Power, which ranks based on owners’ feedback, the Mach-E is ranked No. 8 for compact SUVs, but it’s the top-rated EV in the class. While owners told J.D. Power that its quality is only fair, its driving experience earned a “best” award, most likely because of the performance of the SUV.  

What’s faster, Tesla or Mustang Mach-E?

The Mach-E in GT Performance Edition trim can sprint to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, according to Ford. The Model Y, however, is slightly quicker with a 3.5 second blast to 60, according to Tesla. Other Teslas, like the Plaid edition, are much quicker, booking times of less than 2.0 seconds. But, sometimes being in the fastest electric SUV doesn’t mean you’re in the best electric SUV.

How much will the Mustang Mach-E cost?

Ford Mustang Mach-Es start at $43,895 for the base Select with a standard range battery and all-wheel drive. The AAA-award winning Premium is a step up. Not only is the Premium more expensive, at $48,775, but you can order the extended range battery with 346 horsepower and 303 miles of range. It can be ordered with a B&O sound system, heated seats and steering wheel, and an upgraded interior.

From there you can get the Route 1, that starts at $52,450, and the Mach-E GT that starts at $59,900, or the EGT Performance that is almost $70,000. The performance cars are trying to channel the vibes from the legendary Mach 1 Mustangs. Ford also offers a ton of options packages that include driver safety aids, appearance packages, and more.

The Mach-E seems to be infinitely customizable. You want a rear-wheel-drive? Four-wheel-drive? A GT suspension? A luxury package? An all-white cruiser? Ford’s electric architecture can be customized in any number of ways. The options variety alone could make it the best electric SUV.

The basics are that it comes in five flavors, Select, Premium, California Route 1, GT and GT Performance and Mach-E Ice White Edition. Ford offers two different battery options, a standard range that offers 247 miles of range, and an extended-range battery that offers up to 312 miles of range. From there, it gets confusing because each package can come in several power ratings: 266, 290, 346 or 480 horsepower. Power ratings depend on which wheels power the car, which battery pack you pick, and which package you pick.

How much cargo can the Mach-E hold?

All Mach-Es hold five passengers. While the Select and Premium cars weigh 4,318 pounds, the GT and GT Performance editions  are the fastest of this best electric SUV, weigh up to 4,989 pounds due to different battery packs and the all-wheel-drive systems. They can all hold about 30 cubic feet of storage in the back, or almost 60 cubic feet behind the first row, and 4.7 cubic feet of stuff in the trunk.
