Mercedes EQS vs. Tesla Model S Plaid: Super Electric Cars?
The new Mercedes EQS has finally been announced. How does this new electric vehicle compare to the Tesla Model S Plaid and Plaid+? Well, it does and it doesn’t. The EQS might be an electric vehicle like the Tesla Model S, but that’s where the similarities end.
The 2022 Mercedes EQS electric vehicle
The 2022 Mercedes EQS was just officially unveiled. Mercedes is calling it a new era, starting with the EQS. The all-electric luxury sedan will get up to 435 miles. It is based on the luxury S-class series but has been totally redesigned from the ground up.
The hyper screen goes across the entire dashboard and is brand new technology. At 56 inches wide, the screen will certainly keep passengers entertained. In the U.S., the EQS 450+ will get 329 horsepower. The EQS 580 4MATIC will have 516 horsepower. Both models will get up to 124 miles per hour, per USA Today.
Mercedes new Green Charging feature helps provide electricity back onto the network as you charge. The EQS is being called “the most aerodynamic production car in the world.” This fits with the push to transform into a more green company.
One other feature is coming for Tesla: the ability to update over the air. When your electric vehicle needs an update, Mercedes can do it from afar.
The EQS will offer 100 kWh battery recharges to 80% in around 20 minutes. This will require DC fast charging.
Don’t overlook the Tesla Model S Plaid and Plaid+
Tesla’s Model S Plaid has an estimated range of 390 miles, currently the EV with the longest range. These are still only estimated figures from Tesla as the Plaid+ isn’t on the road yet.
Tesla says the Model S Plaid model will go from 0-60 in 1.99 seconds. It has a top speed of 200 miles per hour and gets an estimated 1,020 horsepower at “peak power.” The Plaid+ has an estimated range of 520 miles and gets from 0-60 in <1.99 seconds.
According to Tesla’s website, the Model S Plaid and Plaid+ will be in your hands within 14 weeks. The regular Plaid model will set you back $114,490. The Plaid+ starts at $144,490.
Tesla vs. Mercedes
Tesla has notoriously cornered the luxury electric vehicle market in recent years, but that time has come to an end. Mercedes is coming for Tesla with the EQS. Since this is just the start of the brand’s switch to all-electric, we can expect many more surprises in the future.
This isn’t to say Tesla’s Model S Plaid and Plaid+ will not be incredible vehicles. The Plaid and Plaid+ will hit the market sometime this summer, while it could be some time before anyone gets hands on an EQS.
The range for the Model S and EQS are both bounds head of other EVs, which will undoubtedly inspire longer ranges on the market. Mercedes is moving quickly with this new electric vehicle, and we can’t wait to learn more about it.
